Commercial Description:
Interlude- somewhere between the leap and the landing. It’s a jazz solo, the riffing, the unexpected improvisation. Rooted in a Belgian theme, Interlude soars from a second fermentation with our own Brettanomyces yeast. Then takes five in French oak wine barrels that once cellared fine Merlots and Sirahs. And then bottle conditioning. In all, an outrageous effort to make a bottle of beer. But then, if you prefer to swing with magnificent red wine notes and funky farmhouse flavors dancing in the undercurrents of a crisp, remarkable brew, then Interlude has that thing. C’est le gout, toujours! It’s the taste that is always an adventure.

Interlude makes a cloudy concoction of grapefruit with a thin rocky head, like mold floating on a cigarette-laden rainwater ashtray. The fruit and vinegar aroma is very pleasant. It promises of a crisp and fruit body with alcohol highlights. The initial taste is a carbonated swig of liquid Juicy Fruit. The second taste, the one where you swish it around and really savor it, has an apple cider and vinegar flavor that is a bit disappointing. This is a nice solid beer but the slightly vinegar taste is not my style.

(750 ml bottle) Opaque orange body with thin off-white head that leaves lace on the glass . Aroma is medium sweet and tart; citrus, vinegar, wine, metallic. Flavor is very tart all the way with fruity, metallic taste, but with the alcohol becoming more apparent on the finish; finishes like a smooth red wine. Oak is present but very subdued and smooth. Medium bodied and slight effervescence. Very excellent.

Draft, at Capone’s (Norristown, PA); previously sampled at Tria Fermentation School. Pours orange-amber, with a thin off-white head. Nice tart, earthy aroma with oak, vanilla, and brett. Flavor is fairly tary, with oak, plum, cherry, and vinous notes. Really exciting beer; I’m a big fan of Allagash beers, and so far this is the best of the bunch.

Beers don’t get that much better than this. Light aroma of oak. Taste is slightly sour, but not at all overpowering. Deliciously complex and worth keeping the whole bottle to oneself.

Bottled at Københavnske Øldage. Golden-orange beer with an off-white head. Sourness, sweetness and spices on the nose. The flavor is sweet and spiced with a little sourness. Quite sticky and sweet and warming in the mouth. Nice fusion of sourness and sweetness. (070511)

2007 750 ml bottle. Pours a semi clear orange golden color with a medium white head. Vinous aroma with hints of grapes, fresh yeast, dough bread and lots of spices. Taste is spicy with cinnamon apple flavor and hints of grapes, fresh yeast and a bit of funk. Nice tarty finish. Very good.

Draft @ Capones. Golden-amber color with a light fizzy head. Aroma of grapes, yeast, bread, and lightly sour citrus fruits. Taste is pleasantly sour with some subtle spices. Grapes, citrus, and oaky flavors detectable. Well done by Allagash, and big props to Matt from Capone’s for getting this on tap (especially with the current Allagash Bottle prices).
