vyvvy (2023), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Mar 7, 2007 Updated: Mar 9, 2007What a fantastically fine and unique beer. January 2007 bottling. Pours hazy copper with a sudsy light tan head. The aroma has lots of farmyard yeast, plums, hints of Sirah and Merlot barrels it was aged in, brett, light fruits (grapes and nectar fruits). The wine side leans more towards the fruit forward Sirah. Fan-f’n-tastic aroma. Medium / full body that is lush and rich with some unobtrusive sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with a mix of Belgium style earthiness and dry red wine that still seems more Sirah than Merlot - and that’s fine with me since I like Sirahs better. There is also some nectarine and pepper like spice along with a tannin aspect. There is a light sweetness, but this is mainly drhy. The finish is sharp and wine-like with earthy malt and yeast and spicy hops becoming noticable. What a succesful experiment. While this is terribly overpriced I will probably get another & I’m also excited to try the 2006 vintage. rerate for adjusting erroneous numbers TheKegergator (241), California, USA Mar 6, 2007 Thanks to markgugs for this one.
Pours a medium dark copper, and really cloudy. Smell and taste is a lot like a Jolly Pumpkin Luciernaga (The Firefly). Sour fruits with a crisp finish. buerckholtz (33), asheville, North Carolina, USA Mar 5, 2007 Vintage 2006. Poured in a goblet, aroma hits you from across the room, no need to stick you nose in the glass on this one! Big fruit, spice and brett on the nose. Flavor was cidery, they must have used a but load of sugar in this one, also oak, red wine, barnyard funk, brett, finishes dry. I liked this one, thought I found that the strong cider flavor took away from this beer. hopslovin (180), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Mar 4, 2007 Pale amber pour with small head. Spicy aromas; cinammon & cumin. Mellow taste, much more mild than I expected. No alcohol presence. Interesting to try but would not buy again. 00cobraR (1096), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Feb 28, 2007 WOW, nit sure i have to many oak aged belgians. Pours out a nice cloudy amber color with a froathy white head. Aroma is full of malts, fruits and yeast. Flavor is sweet, oaky with a slight sourness to it. very nice indeed. rayg1 (433), Ft. Mill, South Carolina, USA Feb 25, 2007 This wonderful brew was shared with ross. It pours a cloudy orange with a nice lasting white head. Smell is oak and tart fruits. The aroma is very pleasing actually. Taste is mellow funk with some spicy notes comming in before the fruitiness of pears come in. I liked this stuff alot and will buy again if I can find it. ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark Feb 20, 2007 Cloudy orange colour with an off white head. Malty, yeasty aroma with a fruity note. Malty, sweet flavor with a yeasty and light perfume note. beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA Feb 12, 2007 My favorite of the barrel aged beers from Allagash that i’ve tried. Some of the others have had too much oak character and they taste like you are drinking beer out of a freshly cut oak mug, this one was a bit more subtle, but the oak was still plenty strong. Pours golden orange with a soapy white head. Dry and spicy with an intersting winey note. I don’t taste much of the bretts, not much dry earthy funk, but a light sour quality shows in the finish. Notes of apple and pear go well with the winey flavor.
