Oddly enough, I rate this beer at a 4 even though I rate the aroma, appearance, taste and palete lower (mid-scale). You have to understand something about this beer BEFORE you drink it. If you don’t you will lose all respect for what the brewer was trying to accomplish. First, let me say that you will be overwhelmed by a fierce acidity in bitterness, tartness and absolute vinegar essences. DO NOT LET THAT THROW YOU. I was privy to a tasting with a rep from the brewery who prepared us for the experience and I can say that without that, I would have pitched it in the sink claiming it to be rancid. However, much like a good balsamic vinegar, this beer does have characteristics of its own to be appreciated. Yes, I said vinegar, and a little salty but once past that, you do taste the berry and raisin and malt as well as the contributions the yeast add. Do try this but remember what I said earlier.

375 ml bottle to snifter at Funk Asheville. Looks good; a cloudy orange with white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells mildly tart and oaky with pungent notes of berries. Tastes like it smells, only more robust and tart. Solid on the palate. Enjoyable.

Bottle. Thanks Les for opening some of these rare bottles at the fest in Raleigh. Really nice sour here, similar to a nice 3f or cantillon fruit lambic. Fruit is still hanging around (I think this was bottled in 2009 or something like that) and it has a lasting tartness, with some light funk and barnyard notes. Really nice sour; one of the better ones I have had from Allagash. I could give a shit less about the perceived "lack" of carbonation in this beer.

375mL Bottle. Thanks for sharing, Sam! Nice jammy raspberry nose, clean and brightly acidic. Flavors develop along the raspberry jam notes, keeping it fresh, lactic, and rounded. There’s a bit of seediness that rounds the raspberry character. Not as complex many of the other really good raspberry sours I’ve had, but it does a really good job of having strong singular raspberries and sourness in nice, enjoyable characters. A fun treat.

Cloudy deep-orange body, thin white head, spotty lacing. Nose is prominently raspberry with some acetic notes, and oak. Flavor is similar with raspberry and oak providing a one-two punch. Medium to light bodied, moderate acidity, moderate carbonation, lingering finish.

Sampled at EBF. The sours that Allagash have produced are just stellar, and this one is no different. Slightly acidic with a good balance between the fruit flavors and the sour tartness.

Sampled at Brewvival 2012. One of the first beers of the day, and definitely one of the best ones there. Clear copper pour with ring of white head. The funky earthy nose was quite good, but the flavor just sent it over the top. Fantastic tart raspberry through and through. perfect amount of acidity. A truly lovely sour.

Bottle served at Brewvival 2012. Pours a hazy orange color with a medium sized fizzy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of tart berries, citrus, earthy and acetic notes. The taste is tart berries, cherries, earth and tart acetic notes. Medium bodied.

Hazy orange-brown pour with a thin tan head. Fresh raspberry aroma. Sour raspberry pie flavor. Light oak on the finish. A bit acetic but not bad.
