Commercial Description:
Musette is Allagash's next release in its Barrel Aged Series. It is Allagash's interpretation of a Belgian-inspired Scotch Ale. Following fermentation with a Belgian strain of yeast, a portion of it is aged in Oak Bourbon Barrels for an additional three months.

750ml bottled may 2006. Tastes a couple months shy of 2 years old. The color is a deep garnet with a swirling head of white cream. The aroma is dark fruit and spice, almost cinnamon and figs. Very nice.
Flavor is sweet malt and those spices. Nicely aged and mellowed. This had to be pretty intense when it was fresh - I’m glad I waited.

Sampled at the North Park Belgian Beer Party at my house on 3-29-08. Pours with a slightly cloudy, amber-brown body topped by a thin, off-white head with some lacing. It’s bitter and peppery with an underlying sweetness and a spicey note. Full bodied and fizzy.

2008-03-28. Hazy dark amber body, modest off white head. (3+) Sweetly yeasty caramel hints. Very light dry wood notes. (7+) Flavour is predominantly dry woody alcohol. Sweet malt foundation struggles to make a showing (7+) Smooth well carbonated palate. Solid, but is missing something and I can’t help but suspect that something would be there if it had not been pushed out by the bold wood character. Interestingly to me, the first batch of this beer was quietly barrel aging when I toured the brewery a few years ago, so it is a treat to finally meet it again in bottled form. Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry, GregClow, Blankboy, Mabel, and Jerc, courtesy of Harry. Very dark orange/brown/copper, bubbly and foamy white head. Sweet woody aroma, some alcohol. Good taste - lots of alcohol, some wood, fruity, sweet. Very good, alcohol present but not 10%, looking for a tad more complexity.

Bottle (750ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc, mabel and tupalev - my bottle=. Hazy amber, average white head. Dry roast malt aroma with citrus juice and rosehips. Pungent spice and sweet malt, that barrel-aging is very light, alcohol is lighter to me than 10% - nice. Light boy, boozy, quick finish, slightly pungent spice aftertaste - pretty good.

Caged and corked. Bottled May 2006. Poured with a garnet color and an initial fizz. The aroma is grapey and full of promise. And on the first sip this is like a soured wine ... earthy, leafy, and tangy. You almost expect some grittiness but of course there isn’t any. (#3351, 3/20/2008)
