chimplechamp (463), Oslo, Norway Mar 12, 2007 bottle- cheers pops- pours a cloudy copper color with a nice foamy offwhite head. nice lacing as well. definately doesnt smell like no scotch ale ive ever had. much more belgiumish probably the yeast and such, some roasted malts and caramel alcohol. a very strange beer. tastes malty but i definately think it has more of a belgium strong taste than scottish. the sour yeastie flavor overpowers anything scottish about it. nice finish with alcohol warming. i think i may eat a piece of cake with this one. richlikebeer (823), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 10, 2007 slightly cloudy bronze color, a bit foamy on the head at first, but settles out to a solid layer of fine head. alot of wood in the nose, along with some yeast, caramel, and a hint of vanilla. very smooth, lots of caramel in the flavor, with the belgian yeast very evident, giving a bit of a doughy flavor up front. the bourbon comes in towards the end and makes up the slightly bitter aftertaste. the smoothness is excellent, although i have had this before, and remember it being a bit smoother...my bottle was an august 06, and i think waiting on this to blend and age would enhance an already very good beer. redlight (1445), Winter Park, Florida, USA Mar 7, 2007 Caramel and vanilla, with hints of melon and apple. Pours amber. Caramel, vanilla, feint hints of smoke, very smooth on the palate. Good malt character, feint bourbon in the middle and after taste, not as strong as in the Curieux. Very nice beer, exceptionally smooth. pantani (1894), Salinas, California, USA Feb 24, 2007 Body is ruby with a thin white head. Aroma is caramel, very malty, with oak and vanilla. Taste malty and warming with yeast and vanilla. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA Feb 19, 2007 Hazy deep ruby with a moderate head, good lacing and retention. Aroma is funk, darker malts and fruits, sugar, spices, hint of barrel. Flavor brings this, the funk and some of the malts really stood out. Medium bodied and very drinkable. There’s a lot going on here, but it’s hard to call this a scotch ale. Enjoyable, a nice sipper. WISEGUY572 (1244), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 13, 2007 I don’t like this any more than Curieux. I mean, every time Allagash does one of these large corked bottle wonders I have to buy it, but ... this is (1) not a Scotch ale and (2) not especially nice. Nasty actually, despite being create and well made. Nasty. Clearly Belgian yeast, and markedly Belgian like everything from Allagash. By color and mouthfeel I’m thinking strong double, unlike the Tripel of Curieux. Is there anything about this that is smokey or Scotch? No. Was there before it was overwhelmed with oak and bourbon? Maybe, but probably not. Another good looking golden Belgian from Allagash, swamped with oak and whiskey. Beautiful dark amber, small head. Spice, alcohol, bubble gum. I really don’t care much for this. // How silly! I rerated an hour later. I don’t like it. It’s like a zillion dollars a case and I poured my first bottle out 1/4 finished. I don’t like the taste, and I down grade the OA because for that price and that much alcohol if it’s not great it’s not even worth thinking about. Yuchers! elmatador00 (518), j-action-ville, North Carolina, USA Feb 8, 2007 Poured cloudy golden color. Brewed in Whiskey barrels. Fruity and malty carmel taste. Really has a whiskey bite. Can feel it going down your throat. Fun beer to drink, maybe because I enjoy whiskey. SwedeDog (364), Windsor, Connecticut, USA Feb 6, 2007 Bottle. Opened for the Super Bowl. The web site recommended to pair this with BBQ. We had chili. Close enough. Nice pour ... orangey copper with a nice head on top. Good carbonation. Aroma of some dark fruits like fig, some earthy tones and some whiskey. To my surprise, I found the mouthfeel to be a little light. It pretty much is a Belgian inspired Scotch ale, with the emphasis on scotch ale. Sweet from caramel and faint dark fruit, slightly astringent (whiskey) and a little bit earthy (roasted malts and a tiny bit of oak). They all balance well, but none of them really knock you out. It’s good, and I appreciate it, but I’m just not into the scotch ales too much.
