Commercial Description:
Musette is Allagash's next release in its Barrel Aged Series. It is Allagash's interpretation of a Belgian-inspired Scotch Ale. Following fermentation with a Belgian strain of yeast, a portion of it is aged in Oak Bourbon Barrels for an additional three months.

Cloudy maple with strong fluffy head. Aroma of some cherry and a very nice subtle malt sweetness. Taste is awesome...very smooth malt sweetness with tastes of belgian yeast, vanilla, maple syrup. Tastes good damn it!

Pours mahogany into a trappist glass. Micro head quickly subsides to skim rim and bubble the center. Fig and bourbon aromas. Upfront sticky sweet caramel with a dry, lasting slightly sour oaked bourbon finish.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, fizzy/frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy medium amber, unfiltered. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain, cookie, caramel), lightly yeasty (barnyard), with notes of cherry, wood, clove, cinnamon, apple peel. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety/syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. It’s got a cool nose, but is kind of vague in the mouth. I would much sooner call this a Belgian strong than a Scotch ale, but it’s nice overall.

750. Beer is very dark cherry wood-brown colored with a small, white, frothy, diminishing head that maintains a thick ring around the permiter..
The aroma’s first impression is sparkling and bright—tangy/acidic almost like a FSA, but with more junk in it’s trunk. Malt notes contain moderate caramel, light-to-moderate toasted grain, light note of roasted nuts; Hoppy with moderate notes of lemon zest, light note of green grass/vegetal herb; Yeasty with light notes of bright horseblanket, dusty attic; Engaging miscellaneous notes include moderate alcohol and Chardonay-like vinosity, light cherry, balsamic vinegar, oak. Charming.
The flavor is heavily sweet, moderately bitter with a very warm-to-hot, moderately bittersweet, dryish, lightly acidic finish.
The body is full, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is lively.

Corked and caged bottle and marked Bottling May 2006. Small tan head that completely diminished, no lacing, no visible carbonation, hazy, and an orange red hue. Vanilla, oak, sweet, alcohol, subtle note of caramel, malt, cherries, and a subtle note of maple. Flavor was very nice--vanilla, vinuous, toffee, maple, hint of spicyness, and some cherries. Tingly mouthfeel and medium body. If you like the Scotch Ale style, give it a try. Definitely one that I would like to have again only the next time I will age it for a while and see if a rerate is in order or not.

750ml bottle via trade with hopdog! - Thanks Steve! - Pours dark ruby with a fluffy tan head that stays well and laces the sides of the snifter that I poured it into.. Aromas of oak, cherries, and a touch of caramel. Flavor of sweet caramel malts, vanilla, oak, smoke, some cherry, and some spice at the finish. Smooth and full bodied throughout a touch of warmth on the finish... Very unique.. Good Scotch ale flavors with a belgian twist.. I like it!!!
