Bottle. Bright chestnut brown with medium sized cream colored head, fading to a thin layer. Fruity and fairly complex aroma with hints of tobacco and sour dried fruit. Flavor is malty and clean leading to a lingering sharp bitterness. As th ebeer warms small hints of butter reveals itself underscoring the maltiness. Alcohol is incredible well hidden. Soft, viscous mouth feel. A tasty beer, but I don’t pick up any oak aroma or flavor unfortunately which drags down the overall score.

2006 bottle-not sure what to expect here. Aggressive pour shows a small white head and brown color. Nose is slightly stale with some wine notes (!). Taste is fairly mild as the barrel flavors have almost disappeared. Some alcohol notes but this has seen better days. Not sure why I waited so long to open this one-guess it got sent to the back of the cellar years ago.

Multiple bottles, not sure where my rating is for this. This is a really cool beer and I dont know of any others which are close to it--at least in terms of style. The Belgian yeast helps to cut the strong malty scotch ale flavors a bit, and also aids in melding the bourbon barrel presence.

Refrigerated 2006 bottling. Pours clear dark brown fleeting off-white head. Soft bready malt aroma. Sweet. The flavor is sweet and malty, no hops here. I’m not really getting any Bourbon here but there are a few things going on with dark fruit and caramel. Hides the alcohol well.

Appearance: No lace or head to really speak of – just a thin white bubbly collar. Clean with a touch of haze amidst the browns, tans, and glints of burnished mahogany. Swirls with not much of anything else.
Nose: Plums, raisins, and prunes. Meaty, bready, and chewy. Whole loaves of homemade raisin bread. Maraschino cherries in the back swallow. More plump juicy dried raisins and prunes.
Palate: Full creamy mouthfeel of medium weight. Candied cherries, prunes, and raisins in the middle along with dense raisin bread. A dry finish of old oak leads me back for more. Fruitcake and rhubarb join the mix. Gentle candied sweetness holds it all together.
Final Thoughts: Another fine beer from Allagash Brewing out of Portland Maine. An underappreciated brewery here in the south, I never fail to be impressed and reminded of the awesomeness that is their beers whenever I taste one. Considering the age of this particular beer, she held up very well, and I would be intrigued to taste a fresh bottling should Allagash ever decide to brew it again.

Sample at Falling Rock Beer Tasting with Dr. Bill on 10/13/2012. Hazy dark brown color with a medium eggshell white head that diminishes steadily. Strings of lacing on the glass. Vinous aroma with some herb and yeast notes. Full-bodied with flavors of herbal yeast, earth and fruit. The finish is oaky with a fruity aftertaste. Above average overall.

Sampled at the St. Louis RB gathering. It poured an almost dark mahogony color. The aroma was nutty, spicey, and clovey. The taste was syrupy sweetness, but almost like a vanilla/honey flavor. It had a full body ending in a warm, creamy finish. A very good scotch ale.

Bottle. Pours a hazy orange with a beige head. Aromas of malt sweetness and spices. Flavor is overly spicy. Some hints of dark fruit and brett. A hint of wood and bourbon on the finish, but almost everything is overpowered by the spiciness. Overall just okay. The spices seem to overwhelming.

750 ml bottle corked and caged. December 2006 vintage. Poured a clear dark orange color. The head was tall and off white with good retention and lacing. Toffee, sassafras, brown sugar, and dark fruit aromas. There was also a faint whiff of booze. Medium bodied and slightly sweet. Still well carbonated after nearly 5 years in the bottle. Balanced flavor profile that included the likes of caramel, whiskey, wood, and fruity Belgian yeast noes. Aged nicely.

Bottle. Certainly will not be confused with a big scotch ale. In fact, I really have a tough time calling this a scotch ale. Nose is faint bourbon and a little more fruity Belgian characteristics. Taste was similar. Bourbon was not that pronounced. Reminded me me of blvd BBQ.
