3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 Sassenach (63) - USA - SEP 21, 2007
Pours a slightly cloudy red/orange, and with a medium to large head. The aroma is of slight yeast, and a hint of wheat. It tastes of rich yeast with a slightly bitter onset. The lingering taste is of sweetened peat malts, and warm scotch. Uses quite a palate.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 cellardoor (45) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - NOV 27, 2007
Bottle dated December 2006. Poured a rather cloudy light brown with a very thin head. Intially served a little cold but as it warmed the sourness faded to a little more light malt and spice. Sourness persisted throughout the tasting, not what I’d expect from a scotch ale. Didn’t pick up the expected oak from the barrel aging. Something I’d like to try again.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 billism (43) - Missouri City, Texas, USA - DEC 17, 2006
Pours a light muddy brown. Medium light tan head that quickly subsides into a small thin blanket which lingers on. Somewhat weak aroma, but nice. Smooth mouth feel. Complex fruitiness. I taste the bourbon barrel, but not over powering. A bit pricey for what it is, but was a pleasure to drink.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 tish (35) - In transition at the moment, Indiana, USA - JAN 7, 2007
well carbonated. ring around the glass as it went down, flavorful of the oak and a little spice.
2.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 mcallister (31) - Dayton, Ohio, USA - JUN 16, 2007
Nothing really makes this beer stand out looks wise. A melted
caramel brownish color with a small white head that does carry
good retention. Not much imagination otherwise.
Sweet black cherry, with a toffeed malt hint and hints of oak.
Sweet fig, raisin, brown sugar, and berries also come forth as
this beer mingles in the glass awhile. A tad of alcohol also
is present. The problem is that all of the aromas are very
subdued.
Hmmm. Well I’m thoroughly dissapointed in this beer. I’ve been
sitting on this for awhile now looking forward too the day of
it’s demise. Not sure if it’s a bad bottle or just old but not
at all what I expected. Lacking any complexity and not nearly
the amount of oak to integrate I was imagining. Well live and
die by the bottle:).
Again lots of dried berries, hints of toffee, milk chocolate,
cherry, and a lackluster attempt at oak aging. An obvious
belgian yeast was used in this and I think Allagash may have
been better off using a traditional yeast with this one.
Thin and watery.
As for drinkability; considering it’s price I will never try
this beer again. Now I have all of these other Allagash "big
beers" in my cellar that I’ve been looking forward too.
Hopefully the others will turn out better.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 skippapotamus (29) - USA - OCT 20, 2006
Poured from bottle at brewery. A nice mix of traditional scottish and belgian flavors - though without a ton of definition, still flavorful and smooth, toward the belgian tradition.
Good notes of vanilla, malt, and the aroma of a good spiced belgian. The barrel process added a hint of oak, the alcohol was certainly present but not overbearing.
