Poured a hazy dark copper color with a medium off-white head. Malty aroma with nice notes of yeasty funk and tartness. Notes of bourbon and big vanilla. Made it tough to tell this was a scotch ale (impossible actually) but had balance over all for a barrel aged beer. Caramel sweet amlt flavor with yeasty and woody notes. Notes of candy. Light alcohol in the flavor with a nice warming sensation. Semi-dry finish.

At Heavyweight Open House - Thanks to Notalush for this! Big-bubbled, frothy white head, over an orange-hued body. A little bit hot in the aroma/nose, but this might also be because the beer itself was warm. Slightly sweet, slighly malty. Fruity, full-bodied, hints of vanilla, as well as woody. Refreshing. Overall, a great beer.

Bottle. Deep pretty almandine body with a thin film of bubbles. Very attractive. Nose-nail polish remover, lemon, alcohol, apple juice, honey. Taste-honey (big time), perfect honey flavors, clove, alcohol, and caramel. Thick ,sticky, and nice. Reminds me of watered down bourbon.

Bottle from Super Saver. Pours turbid deep coppery with some deep gold accents on the bottom of the glass. The aroma is oaky, woody, peaty, and charred, with some fruit and bourbon and yeast hints. The flavor is caramel malty at first, with an explosion of smoky, charred, oaky bourbon, fruit, grapey notes, and some citrusy yeast hints. Rich palate. This one has a strong charred, woody, peaty, earthy, fruity grapey thing going on, and it is unique and works quite well.

Pours clear copper with some orange-gold where the glass is thin. My first impression of the aroma is an excellent balance of peaty smoke and that omnipresent Allagash yeast aroma. Upon further exploration, nutty and fruity notes arise, alongside caramel. As it warms and sits, spicy, ginger-y aromas appear. Good so far. The flavor is mostly smoky and malty, but there is some earth, grape, and a host of other minor flavors--most of which I can’t put my finger on--to add complexity. Interesting dry bourbon and chocolate finish, with an appropriate amount of alcohol coming through. The chocolate comes through more as the beer warms. The alcohol actually blends with the smoky dryness quite pleasantly, making this beer second only to Stoudt’s Abbey Dubbel in the use of alcohol flavors to add significantly to the brew. Another successful experiment. Now if they’d only throw some Brett in there...

750ml bottle via trade with hopdog! - Thanks Steve! - Pours dark ruby with a fluffy tan head that stays well and laces the sides of the snifter that I poured it into.. Aromas of oak, cherries, and a touch of caramel. Flavor of sweet caramel malts, vanilla, oak, smoke, some cherry, and some spice at the finish. Smooth and full bodied throughout a touch of warmth on the finish... Very unique.. Good Scotch ale flavors with a belgian twist.. I like it!!!

(07.29.06) One pint 9.4 oz brown bottle from DiCarlo’s, Mundelein, IL. Bottled 5/2006. 690 cases bottled. 10% ABV. Spicy caramel aroma. Poured hazy amber with giant off-white head. Soft carbonation. Medium bodied oak-aged Belgium style ale that starts with light malt sweetness and spicy (coriander)/fruity/oak wood flavors. Finished dry with spicy aftertaste. Smooth, well-balanced and clean tasting, this is another enjoyable delicious Allagash beer. I wish I bought some more bottles while I had a chance.

UPDATED: AUG 17, 2006 Orange-gold, nice lacing and decent retention. Malty core, slight vanilla notes, with bourbon appearing only along the edges. Far more balanced than the Curieux offerering, with slight bourbon and prominent tartness on the finish.

UPDATED: MAR 12, 2008 Draught at Capone’s. Deep amber brown body with nice head. Aroma is of dried fruit, oak, caramel and light spices. Flavor is dried currants, oak, vanilla, caramel, bosc pear, light smoke. This was smoother than I expected it to be. A nice sipping beer.
