2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 JensenTaster (1718) - DENMARK - MAY 12, 2008
(on bottle) Rustyred, white head. Aomas from cranberries, wood and mash. Sweet ´n´soft mouthfeel. No real peat or tar here, gets very sweet in the finish, so sweet not even the 10% can balance it out.

Nothing really makes this beer stand out looks wise. A melted
caramel brownish color with a small white head that does carry
good retention. Not much imagination otherwise.
Sweet black cherry, with a toffeed malt hint and hints of oak.
Sweet fig, raisin, brown sugar, and berries also come forth as
this beer mingles in the glass awhile. A tad of alcohol also
is present. The problem is that all of the aromas are very
subdued.
Hmmm. Well I’m thoroughly dissapointed in this beer. I’ve been
sitting on this for awhile now looking forward too the day of
it’s demise. Not sure if it’s a bad bottle or just old but not
at all what I expected. Lacking any complexity and not nearly
the amount of oak to integrate I was imagining. Well live and
die by the bottle:).
Again lots of dried berries, hints of toffee, milk chocolate,
cherry, and a lackluster attempt at oak aging. An obvious
belgian yeast was used in this and I think Allagash may have
been better off using a traditional yeast with this one.
Thin and watery.
As for drinkability; considering it’s price I will never try
this beer again. Now I have all of these other Allagash "big
beers" in my cellar that I’ve been looking forward too.
Hopefully the others will turn out better.
2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 footbalm (1219) - Western Minneapolis Suburbs, Minnesota, USA - OCT 3, 2006
I must have had a totally different brew then the "Matrix" as this had very little
defined qualitiy at all. I had to let it sit for a while to warm up thinking it would help but ... some oaken but nothing at all like I have had in other BA brews. I really
did not know what I was tasting. Lots of syrupy flavor but... no thanks.

I don’t like this any more than Curieux. I mean, every time Allagash does one of these large corked bottle wonders I have to buy it, but ... this is (1) not a Scotch ale and (2) not especially nice. Nasty actually, despite being create and well made. Nasty. Clearly Belgian yeast, and markedly Belgian like everything from Allagash. By color and mouthfeel I’m thinking strong double, unlike the Tripel of Curieux. Is there anything about this that is smokey or Scotch? No. Was there before it was overwhelmed with oak and bourbon? Maybe, but probably not. Another good looking golden Belgian from Allagash, swamped with oak and whiskey. Beautiful dark amber, small head. Spice, alcohol, bubble gum. I really don’t care much for this. // How silly! I rerated an hour later. I don’t like it. It’s like a zillion dollars a case and I poured my first bottle out 1/4 finished. I don’t like the taste, and I down grade the OA because for that price and that much alcohol if it’s not great it’s not even worth thinking about. Yuchers!
1.9 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 YourDarkLord (1800) - Urbana, Illinois, USA - JUL 23, 2007
Cloudy orange beer with a frothy beige head. Aroma of spices, oak, yeast, cooked fruit. Medium body with ample carbonation. Flavor was less a Scotch ale than a Belgian and left me greatly disappointed.
