UPDATED: MAR 12, 2008 Draught at Capone’s. Deep amber brown body with nice head. Aroma is of dried fruit, oak, caramel and light spices. Flavor is dried currants, oak, vanilla, caramel, bosc pear, light smoke. This was smoother than I expected it to be. A nice sipping beer.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 RiverHorse (457) - New Jersey, USA - JUL 1, 2007
On tap at Capones, 9 oz. poured into a snifter. Pours a very cloudy brown with a small tan head. The scent is fruit, figs, carmel and oak. The nice surprise on the palate was the hints of vanilla to go along with the oak and malty flavors. As the beer warmed, the oak and vanilla played well together and were perfect on the palate. This was a very nice beer.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 gunsho (134) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - APR 17, 2007
this dark, almost burnt amber color is quite a site with its cloudlike head. the nose is filled with caramel and leather, nuts and meat. the flavor adds spice, brown sugar, and apple to this meaty and caramel concoction. the nice slighltyheavy palate makes this beer delectible. i’d love to drink it in january with haggis, neeps, and tatties.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2008 This was a VERY good beer. It was way too pricey but it’s kind of like the difference between a 21 year old Irish Whiskey and regular Jameson’s. It had a slightly hoppy flavor without the harshness. Wish I could put into words what my tongue is feeling. I will be buying more.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 hiddenvariable (203) - pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 1, 2008
bottle. pours a deep hazy amber, with a huge fluffy off-white head that lasts and lasts, and leaves a nice bit of lacing. smell is raisin and plum and grape and pear, with some woody caramel notes threatening the fruity esters for dominance, but failing. also a hint of alcohol in the end of the smell, but nothing that overwhelms, and certainly nothing that detracts. tons of fruit in the taste, dominated by pear and grape, along with some spices, and again a large caramel malty note, as well as some wood and a bit of bread. a chewy and coating mouthfeel, with a light bittersweet finish, a lot of carbonation, and a pretty full body. reminds me of some of my favorite belgians (like rochefort 10 and st. bernardus), except with the esters tending more toward pear, and a lot more of a caramel malt character. i really enjoyed this beer, and i wish i didn’t have to pay $13.99 for it.

UPDATED: APR 16, 2008 On tap at Publick House in Boston. Pours dark amber with minimal light tan head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, and whisky. Really nice taste. The flavor has real complexity, with notes of chocolate and dark fruits in addition to the caramel and whisky. The whisky is present throughout, but adds to, rather than dominates the flavor. Warming alcohol on the finish. Excellent offering.

(Des. 2006) 75 cl bottle at Hopheads´ tasting 30.01.09 (Trygve). Brown/amber color, lovely off-white/beige head. Aroma is oaky and sweet malty. Flavor is sweet, oak, whisky... Very interesting, and I like it!

March 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark amber color with a medium frothy light tan head. The aroma is a pungent caramel and sugar. Decent lacing on the glass. The taste is a smooth light malt with raisin and brown sugar. Hides the alcohol well. A very good scot ale from Allagash.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 Slayer85 (872) - Firenze, ITALY - DEC 16, 2008
750 ml bottle. A hazy deep amber beer with a medium sized, creamy and quite persistent beige head. The aroma is malty and yeasty with notes of spices, fruits and some woodiness. Lightly toasty. The wood character is not overwhelming. The flavour is quite sweet and has some acidity. Fruity with notes of grapes and spicy. Once again the oakiness is balanced but present. Medium to full body, lively carbonation, dry and quite long finish with light to medium bitterness. Lightly alcoholic. Very good appearence and elegant both in nose and mouth. Underrated like their Tripel.
