TeamTrappist (361), jericho, New York, USA Nov 5, 2009 Tap at Blind tiger. Poured a medium brown with a thin white head. Nice malts and candied sugars make this a very tasty Belgian strong. Maybe a less sweet and thinner version of rochefort 8, but almost as delicious, almost. Mice depth of flavor which keeps this brewer at the top of American Belgian style ales. jujubeast6000 (768), Houston, Texas, USA Nov 5, 2009 Reviewed 8/19/2009 (Bottled January 2008):
Pours a very dark brown colored body, with a big creamy tannish color head. Lasting. Fruity aroma, some dark fruit, and some lightish fruit too. Some fig, and some alcohol too. Some roasted notes, and maybe some chocolate. Very strong aroma, kind of funky. Roasty, woody taste. Some wood taste, probably the oak barrel. Some smoke too. This could age in taste very well. Very carbonated. Not sure I really like the taste. A little harsh now, maybe in a few months or years it would taste better. corby112 (670), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 1, 2009 Pours a very dark chestnut brown color with a huge frothy, pillowy tan head with excellent retention, only slowly fading into a lasting cap that leaves chunks of soapy lacing in it’s wake.
Chocolate malty aroma that is slightly earthy with hints of oaky wood. Dark fruit notes and peppery spice also present.
Creamy malty body with lots of estery dark fruit notes, especially raisin, prune, plum, and dark berries with lots of peppery zest, chocolate malts and earthy oak. Very smooth and quaffable with hints of grape and cherry dark fruit. Very nice balance of dark fruit and chocolate malt. The ABV is excellently balanced without a trace of alcohol warmth making this beer extremely quaffable. Sweet dry finish. Excellent!
patrickfannon (270), Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 31, 2009 Bottle. 25.4 oz. Split with Braden. Pours deep amber, with a thick, lasting beige head. Aroma of figs, raisins, roasted malts, and hints of chocolate, soil, and chesnuts. Full bodied with a heavy, creamy mouthfeel. Excellent Belgian strong. Highly recommended. hapjydeuce (763), Del Mar, California, USA Oct 28, 2009 On tap at OBriens Pub in San Diego. A beginner of a fine evening of weeknight drinking late in September with Katie. Color is dark brown with a fine developing white lace served in a Chimay chalice. Aroma is mostly ashy smoke and dark fruit, with raisins and cherry tossed in the mix. Flavor is fairly light and dry, with bitter smoke and just a hint of oak showing through in the finish. Dark fruits comprise most of the flavor up front. Belgian yeast notes linger in the finish. Pretty tasty. ditmier (1015), Boise, Idaho, USA Oct 22, 2009 2006 Bottle - Thanks Ughsmash! - Pours a thin black with a medium beige head...aroma is vanilla oak, caramel and cocoa...flavour is similar, toast, massive wood and sweet creme, chocolate malt and more sweet wood...plenty of unfermented sugars in this, but not sticky, just sweet...the oak is #1 and everything else is secondary in this brew, and I really dug it... ucusty (1865), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Oct 18, 2009 Dark brown almost still pour. Aroma of caramel, toffee, oaky tannins, and chocolate on the nose. Flavor does not live up to the aroma. Flavor is Earthy with notes of toffee, chocolate, vanilla, light bourbon, & toasted hazelnut.
