Pours crimson red/ruby hue with a small fizzy off-white head that last the entire time of the beer. Looks very belgian like if you ask me-fizzy carbonation on the head. aroma is awesome-oak, vanilla, belgian spices, sweet belgian malt, and a twangy/earthy yeast note. aroma is somewhat woody as well. Carbonation is high, but this is not detracting from this beer due to the nature of this beast. awesome complexity and what a fantastic brew! scraff (1955), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 13, 2005 Deep cola colored ale, light tan fizzy head. The nose held rich and complex tones of vanilla, buttered oak, toasted waffles, cocoa, and spices, with lighter notes of apple and marshmallow. Flavor practically matched aroma with spiced bourbon, vanilla, plum, and toasty oak up front, and a tangy citric hop addition late which helps to maintain a very nice balance. Medium to full bodied, zesty carbonation, dry, oaky finish. Another great Allagash creation....

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 12, 2005 Deep, deep red. Smells meaty, is this liquidized bacon I see before me? Some prunes and smoke as well. Tastes woody and oaky, dark fruit, deeply sweet. Alcohol burns at the end. Nice stuff, the oak isn’t overly done, adds to the beer nicely. tronraner (1939), Seymour, Tennessee, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Feb 11, 2007 750 mL bottle. Pours somewhere between burnt orange and black, with a nice khaki head. The aroma is prune, scotch, banana, and hints of licorice, cocoa, and honey. The flavor is chocolate and raisin at first, then some clove, licorice, and molasses. It works toward a roasty note like espresso and a very mild scotch-like finish. Warm aftertaste. This is one tasty brew. MrRomero (1934), Nolanville, Texas, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 30, 2005 Updated: Jul 1, 2005Pours a dark body with a moderate head. Aroma is remnicent of wine and wood... oak by any chance? haha. If it’s not wine, it’s some other form of hard alcohol. Maybe rum or bourbon? It’s very smooth based on the aroma and the alcohol %. However, the flavor doesn’t match the price tag. $15 for a bottle = never again. Even if I won the lottory I wouldn’t buy this beer. It’s not that special anyway.
