Bottle from Olive Tree Market. Pours a deep amber with a slight ruby hue, frothy beige head with some spotty lacing. Some candie sugar, coffee grounds, cocoa dust and dried dark fruits on the nose. Very woody on the palate with hints of charred oak, spice, yeast and dried figs......tasty stuff.

750ml from Whole Foods, Raleigh. One of the very best of Allagash’s barrel-aged series. Dark brown pour with very intense carbonation, releasing extremely appealing bourbon and oak notes. The foundation is a good solid Belgian strong, almost like Fin du Monde in a sense, given how prominent raisins and other fruits are in the flavor. Full mouthfeel, prickly carb and a bit of pepper, but it’s all smoothed out by the soft, subtle bourbon notes, which bring the beer together. Delish!

On tap at Stone Bistro. Dark red/brown pour. Sweet malt, bread, caramel, dark fruit, raisin and hints of wood. Pretty good beer, enjoyable, but not spectacular.

Dark brown, toasty, very nice.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 emacgee (2844) - Carrboro, North Carolina, USA - MAR 16, 2009
Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. Thin light tan head. The nose has some soy character, dark wheat shows for sure, some grain, oak, mild sweetness, yeasty. The flavor is oaky, tannic, soy sauce, dark wheat comes through, a bit grainy, mildly yeasty. Not a fan of the flavor. Tannic on the palate with mild carbonation. Let down on this one.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Butters (2841) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - JAN 11, 2011
Sampled at the Brewvival 1. Near clear brown pour with no head. Sweet caramel, and a little burnt, scotch and nuttiness. Kinda boring actually. Or maybe my palate had already been blown out. I don’t know what it was particularly, but I didn’t really care for this one too much.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 beerinmarch (2830) - Washington, USA - JUL 10, 2005
Pours a lightly cloudy amber with an off-white head. Massive oak aroma and flavor, a bit too woody, could be a bit more subtle. The spiciness of the yeast esters struggled against the oak aroma. Taste starts sweet with a nice fig and caramel sweetness that is quickly faded into a percieved dryness by the oak. The actual dryness in the finish isn’t half of how dry all the oak makes it feel. An interesting beer, but I wish they had blended it differently.
