dark hazy pour, big full offwhite head. Aroma is fruity, some cherries, apples, maybe some apricot, with a touch of smoke, and sweet malt. Flavour is very nice, lots of sweet malt, with a good dose of caramel, and some sweet tobacco, and smoke. A very complex beer, i’m sure i missed many nuances, but what i had i really enjoyed.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 jimhilt (2166) - Bow, New Hampshire, USA - JAN 10, 2009
Pours a two-finger cream head that fades slowly to a ring leaving some lace. Totally black color. Medium carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Raisin/malty nose. Flavor is sweet, raisin, hints of oak. The high ABV is hidden. Bottled Jan 2008. Over the top but worth trying at $17.00 for a 750ml bottle from a Tully’s Beer & Wine Wells, ME.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Dorwart (2158) - Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA - APR 14, 2006
Thin light brown head of fine bubbles. Very good carbonation keeps a thin foam on the surface. Nice aroma loaded with raisins, grapes, plums and vanilla. Color is a dark port brown. Rich and lively in the mouth. Loads of malts, vanilla, caramel for sweetness and some more raisins. The wheat gives it a little extra body also. Very good stuff. Rich and potent. A little oak in there but not a lot. I have been noticing a lot of beers aged in oak pick up some vanilla notes. Finish is creamy and smooth with a nice alcohol warming. A very good belgian strong ale.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 NYHarvey (2153) - New York, New York, USA - DEC 25, 2006
UPDATED: DEC 27, 2006 The body is a ruddy brown that approaches black. The head is a thumb thick, tan and bubbly. The aroma yields mild smokiness, oak, vanilla, roasted baker’s chocolate and dark fruit.
Fore is big with oak...it gets astringent though like the oak might have been too green. Toasty malts, mild vanilla notes, some malt sweetness and stiff alcohol all make plays at the flavor profile. Very mild smokey notes appear in the finish. This is a stellar beer at times, but the wood notes seem caustic at other times. In the end the positive lements outweigh the negative, but the negative elements do distract.

Bottle Pours out a dark brown with some red highlights topped with a sandy head. Aroma was of sweet malts, caramel, wood, and some bread. Taste was much as the aroma with a good about of the barrel showing threw. Plenty of the sweetness and spice to help push the wood back.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 scraff (2120) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - JUL 13, 2005
Deep cola colored ale, light tan fizzy head. The nose held rich and complex tones of vanilla, buttered oak, toasted waffles, cocoa, and spices, with lighter notes of apple and marshmallow. Flavor practically matched aroma with spiced bourbon, vanilla, plum, and toasty oak up front, and a tangy citric hop addition late which helps to maintain a very nice balance. Medium to full bodied, zesty carbonation, dry, oaky finish. Another great Allagash creation....

Large tan head that lasts, thick layer of clingy lace that takes the full ride. Clear chestnut hued brew. Fruity nose, notes of wood, spice and a bit of whisky. Med/full body, soft creamy mouthfeel thats coating. Dark fruit flavors, toasty malts, hints of roast and anise with a defined woodiness. Finish is dry, fruity and woody. An enjoyable, easy to drink B/A brew.
