COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Red Howes is the brainchild of Allagash employee, Jeff "Oly" Olson. Oly grew up in a family of cranberry farmers. Red Howes is not only a variety of cranberry but also happened to be the name of Olyís grandfather. Oly spent much of his childhood with his grandfather in the cranberry bogs, developing a love of farming and music (Olyís other occupation). Black in color with a creamy biege head, Red Howes is a stout brewed with 2-Row barley, a blend of roasted malts and 3,000lbs of local cranberries, both Red Howes and Early Black varieties. The finished beer has cocoa, coffee and berries in the aroma and flavors of dried fruit and bitter chocolate with a slight tartness and a dry, lingering finish.

Great beer that has a tart taste of the cranberry but is still a bit sweet with the yeast strain and a great alcohol warmth. Yummy.

Pouring at EBF 2014. Pours a clear cola brown with a thin tan head. Roast, cocoa, chocolate on the nose. Medium bodied, chocolate, roast, more cocoa. Notes of coffee, warm brownies. Long slow roast bitterness on the finish.

On tap @ SLL. Pours a medium brown color, with a short light brown head that fades slowly and leaves thick lace on the glass. The aroma is roasted malts, some coffee, light chocolate, dark fruits and a touch of cranberry hidden in the back. The taste starts with a hearty malt character followed by mild flavors of coffee and chocolate. The cranberry flavor comes in lightly mid-palate and is not overdone. The hops are very mild and create a nice balance, with a finish that is slightly bitter-sweet. Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.

Another stout with an ingredient that I am not picking up. The cranberries arenít imparting enough punch to this beer which is a really solid stout with some nice roast coffee notes to it.

Draft sampler. Deep brown with small tan head. Bitter cocoa and roasted malt, maybe a touch of cranberries. Somewhat interesting, but ultimately average.

Draft at mill town. Pours black with a thin khaki head. It coats the glass with lacy goodness. I get a bit of tartness from the cranberries on the nose. Very tart on the tongue. The cranberry lingers on the finish. Itís an interesting experiment but I donít know if Iíd want another.

Pours a deep dark black with two fingers of coffee tan head. Nose shows fruit skins, coffee, a touch of acetaldehyde and roast. Toasty flavor with peppery phenolics and a drying quality.

On tap at 33 West, Dover. Dark pour, thin frothy head. Aroma of cocoa. Deep cocoa flavor with roasted malts and a subtle fruitiness. This finished with a tart, almost sour zing...I didnít have the "cranberry" description as I was drinking it...but that makes sense. Rich and creamy mouthfeel. This was very good.
