COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Red Howes is the brainchild of Allagash employee, Jeff "Oly" Olson. Oly grew up in a family of cranberry farmers. Red Howes is not only a variety of cranberry but also happened to be the name of Olyís grandfather. Oly spent much of his childhood with his grandfather in the cranberry bogs, developing a love of farming and music (Olyís other occupation). Black in color with a creamy biege head, Red Howes is a stout brewed with 2-Row barley, a blend of roasted malts and 3,000lbs of local cranberries, both Red Howes and Early Black varieties. The finished beer has cocoa, coffee and berries in the aroma and flavors of dried fruit and bitter chocolate with a slight tartness and a dry, lingering finish.

Draft at mill town. Pours black with a thin khaki head. It coats the glass with lacy goodness. I get a bit of tartness from the cranberries on the nose. Very tart on the tongue. The cranberry lingers on the finish. Itís an interesting experiment but I donít know if Iíd want another.

On tap at 33 West, Dover. Dark pour, thin frothy head. Aroma of cocoa. Deep cocoa flavor with roasted malts and a subtle fruitiness. This finished with a tart, almost sour zing...I didnít have the "cranberry" description as I was drinking it...but that makes sense. Rich and creamy mouthfeel. This was very good.

Aroma of cocoa and roasted malt. Flavor is cocoa, roasted malt, and a slight tart finish. Wouldn't say I could pick out cranberry if I didn't know about it, but it does give it a nice dry finish and slight tart. Very full flavored and balanced. Doesn't taste nearly as strong as it is. Really a nice stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Some nice musk, and a substantial note of burnt smoke with some coffee. Very bitter finish with mix of smoke and burnt taste. Black without much head or lacing. Tap at Smoke and Barrel.

Deep black with foamy creamy tan head.... Aroma of roasted malts, light cranberry... Flavor is mostly dark roasted malts, hints of cranberry sweetness throughout... Hint of Belgian specialty grains, yeast on finish... Solid but not terribly exciting ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
