Commercial Description:
Allagash Speciale Reserve is a refreshing, light-copper colored beer brewed in the tradition of the Belgian ales of Brabant. We brew it in limited quantities each spring, and its distinctive toasted malt flavor, and herbal and fruit bouquet make it a perfect beer for a warm summer day. Suggested Food Pairings: Enjoy Allagash Speciale Reserve on its own, or with a light appetizer. Also try pairing it with shellfish, such as the traditional Belgian dish, Moules-frites . Serving/Pouring Suggestions: Allagash Speciale Reserve is re-fermented in the bottle in the traditional Methode Champenoise, and therefore contains a natural yeast sediment. Allow the bottle to rest upright for a few minutes prior to serving, then carefully decant the beer off the yeast. Style: Brabant Style Ale (Belgian Pale) Available In: 750 ml Bottle - Seasonal Alcohol Content: 5% ABV Original Gravity: 1047 Recommended Serving Temperature: 45-60 degrees F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55 degrees F (Not recommended for long periods of cellaring)

Allagash Speciale Reserve Ale (Batch #8 from 2003?)

Date: 3/28/2007
Serving: 750 mL corked and caged bottle (brought by me).
Event: Columbus Wednesday night tasting.
Location: nolankowal’s place.

Tasting Notes
Aroma: Fruity with some herb and spices. Slight oxidization noticeable as well.
Appearance: Murky golden color with a small white crown and some suspended yeast specks (this stuff had been rolling around in a cooler all day).
Flavor: Light malts, fruit, and spice.
Palate: Medium to light body and generously carbonated.
Overall: Refreshing and crisp. Not too bad for a 3-4 year old bottle of Wit beer! It has been stored in a refigerator ever since it arrived at the store I got it from, so I think that helped...

750 from a departmental picnic - thanks, John! Seems like this bottle was miles better than the bottle shared by the local crew. Handsome orange color, slightly cloudy, and a big head. Not a trace of skunk, and in fact some gentle sweet apple aromas with hints of nut in there. Moderate yeast in the body, abundant carbonation and full mouthfeel. Pretty good quaffer.

Haven’t tried or seen this beer for a while. And the David shows up with a 750 of it with a label I’ve never seen before and its a batch #5. This shit was mad old and showed. Not a great cellar beer. Nose is incredibly skunkified, with old sweaty gym socks, armpit, and mild skunky pot. Flavor is similar, very sweaty and skunky. Haven’t had a beer this skunked out in quite some time. Definitely an experience, but not one I want to have again for a while.

Carolina Crew tasting. Batch 5 Quite possibly the worst/skunkiest beer i’ve ever tasted. Flavor is similar to dank marijuana. I like that flavor in my weed, but in my beer no way!

Bottle of Batch 5, labeled "Speciale," so this beer was likely 4+ years old, and it did not age well at all. Smell of skunk, skunky weed, and sweaty gym socks. Notes of sour grass. I honestly spit it out when i tasted it, so I didn’t pick up any flavors when tasting it. I’m sure this was once decent; thought I’d rate to advise against picking up and old botte.

Draft at the Blind Tiger, thanks to MaxDaddy. Brown pour with only a little head. The aroma was bready, slightly earthy malt and grain. The flavor is the same with some yeastiness. Alright, but more of a summer wheat beer than a belgian ale.
