It’s 99 degrees, I’m having brunch, and smoked salmon is on the menu. Who could resist this? Perhaps I should have, as wits really aren’t my thing, but I figured that I should at least sample this flagship offering from one of my favorite American breweries. The National poured this from a tap into a shaker, which was clearly the wrong glassware choice but nonetheless highlighted the ale’s unfiltered characteristics and lemonade-ish hue. The body was watery, the finish refreshing, and the flavor a mixture of oranges and bananas. In short, this was the perfect accompaniment to my brunch. Essentially, it is the beer version of a mimosa. Would I want another one? Only under similar circumstances. In other words, no matter how much I dislike wits, this beer does have a place ... even it’s a place that I only rarely visit.

Bottle. Poured a light cloudy yellow with a small creamy white head that was fully diminishing and had fair lacing. The aroma was very mild of grainy malts, light herbal hops and a strong moldy yeast with notes of coriander, pepper and citrus(orange peel I believe). It tasted moderately bitter at first for a wheat ale and ended with a light bitter yeasty flavor that had hints of spices and orange peel with the flavor not lasting long at all. Mouthfeel was light in body and creamy in texture with a nice soft carbonation. Overall a nice creamy wheat ale, actually nicely surprising.

The beer pours a hazy yellow color with a white head. The beer is cloudy but clears up after it has sat for a white. The aroma is coriander and orange peel. The flavor is more of the same with the addition of a little bit of lemon and yeast. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

One of my favorite beers. It has a crisp flavor, pale orange color, and a fruity aroma.

On tap at Tribes Alehouse. Cloudy golden with a big, frothy white head. Decent lacing. The aroma was mostly yeasty banana and clove. The flavor was the same, good though. Nice carbonation and finish. Solid wit.

On tap at Churchkey, 6/5/2010. Pours a cloudy, hazy whitish yellow, with a thin white head. Aroma has some old bitter citrus peel and some wheat, but overall is quite weak. Flavor has lots of yeast and a bit of bitter citrus, OK but again a bit boring. Finish has somewhat bitter citrus and wheat.
