dmac (1417), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Aug 21, 2007 12 oz bottle purcahsed at Monaghans. Poured a classic hazy golden/yellow with a large bright white foamy head. Aroma of wheat, coriander, pepper, grass, lemon and some spicy pepper. Palate was very quaffable with a light medium palate, slight carbonation and an overall smooth feel. Flavor was spicy with nice accent on the coriander but not too much that it distracts from the fresh wheat and grassy flavors. This is a very nice beer for an underappreciated style. Served on tap in a pint glass. The beer is a light yellow flaxen color that was almost clear. There was a nice white head that laid lightly on top. It smells light, fresh and citrus with a tiny bit of yeast but in no way overpowering.
There is definitely a bit of citrus and sweetness to the beer. It has a perfume like aftertaste that stays in on the tongue.
The beer goes down very light but with very fine carbonation but as it warms up it seems to expand in the mouth leaving a foam as it dissolves in your mouth.
It goes down nicely and is light and refreshing but it does expand in the mouth somewhat as it warms up.
DrJ1963 (2), Brigantine, New Jersey, USA does not count Aug 18, 2007 Very good White beer. Very true to style. Very similar to Hoegarden, but the differences are there to be tasted, in a complimentary way. I put this on tap on my back porch each summer. Gone through two sixtels so far and it is only August 18th. keoki182 (305), West Bend, Wisconsin, USA Aug 13, 2007 From bottle. Very cloudy sunshine yellow with very thin white head. Aroma is yeasty and some banana. Reminds me of a hefe. Some hoppy bitterness on my tongue when tasting. Very spicy and prickly mouthfeel. Decent citrus (orange/lemon?) flavor in the long savor. Leaves no aftertaste. Goodgrief (1144), Middletown, Delaware, USA Aug 11, 2007 Poured a beautiful cloudy yellow with BIG foamy head. This was one of my fav witbiers yet. Spicy, sweet, malty, little hoppy taste in there, yeasty. This had it all going on. Most complex witbier I’ve had and this was very, very good. I’ll have to try more Allagash offerings. WankerWeasel (18), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Aug 8, 2007 Batch #31 the bottle says. Pop the cork and pour it into a nice big open mouth chalice. Nice hazy yellow straw color liquid fills the glass and a big thick foamy head covers the top. The foam slowly settles and covers the sides of the glass in a sticky layer of lace. Big sweet wheat malt sweetness breaks through up front and it closely followed by a big kick of yeasty banana filling the nose. Just a touch of lemon and a hint of orange peel round out the aroma. Wonderful. Smooth and slightly sweet wheat malt fills the mouth. Big and juicy it is soon followed by a wonderful yeast note with great banana flavor coating the palate. More juicy sweetness and a bit of lemon come in. Just makes your mouth water. Big of juicy melon even comes into the mix a bit. On the aftertaste there’s just a hint of woodsy oak and a bit of dry sweetness. Smooth from start to finish. Wonderfully balanced and amazingly easy to drink. More please. csbosox (1076), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Aug 8, 2007 Updated: Jul 31, 200812oz bottle. Cloudy golden with a large, billowy head. Aroma is sharp wheat, coriander, orange/citrus, light spice, and yeast. Taste is sharp wheat, yeast, spicy and earthy hops, and a bit of coriander and citrus. Finish is mildly sour and/or tart. Nice example, but fairly typical.
