COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also available Bottle Conditioned;
a very dark traditional style stout with a creamy brown head. Brewed to commemorate the famous Tar Bar’l celebrations of Allendale when the ‘Guisers’ (long established men of the village) carry flaming barrels of tar on their heads before throwing them on a bonfire in the very centre of the village on New-Year’s eve. The Tar Bar’l is smooth and rich with coffee and chocolate flavours.

Bottle conditioned, 500ml, from Harbury Beer Fest ’07. Black with a slight brown head. Poured flat and still, difficult to get a head on it, licorice aroma. Thin, watery beer in the bottle, it doesn’t shout stout at you at all. Plenty of smoky, burnt notes, a bit bon-firey in character, but much too thin to get much else. Disappointing.

Smells of nice berry, with nut and light roast. Malt. Solid black that light cant pass through with a lasting creamy head. Smooth light creamy body. Taste of dark berries, light roast with some chocolate. A little burnt. Nice but too berry for my liking.

Bottle (500ml):
Very stout like in smell with some strong coffee and roasted malts on the nose to begin with. This is quickly followed on by some barely and dark chocolate. It is of about medium strength
Black in with a brownish white head that is about a cm tall and bubbly in texture before it quickly turns to a patchy, soapy lacing.
A strong roasted malts and barely taste along with coffee to a slightly less extent. There is a lingering coffee aftertaste along with some dark chocolate and a touch of burnt toast.
Medium bodied with rather high carbonation levels and a fair bit of fizz to the drink.

I would rate this one as below average and a bit too gassy to really enjoy although it wasn’t that bad a beer, just not one to seek out.

500 ml bottle, from The Cheese & Wine Shop, Darlington. ABV is 4.5%. Black colour, large to moderate tan head. Aroma of roasted barley and cold coffee, hints of ashes. Dry flavour, roasty notes of coffee and dark chocolate, a hint of ashes again. Moderate bitterness.

Cask at Market Porter. Pours opaque brown with a thin film of off-white head. Good roasted malt aroma with cocoa and coffee. Fairly sweet flavor, though the roastiness is less pronounced and the dark malt character is a bit awkward. Light in body with soft carbonation. Finishes with meak sweetness and some lingering roast. Bit of a let down after a strong start.

Bottle, Glenridding mini market. As the comments below say, it’s a stout. Good roastiness, pleasant pitch black appearance, with a slighlty tan head. Nothing spectacular, but a good all round beer.

Classic stout pour, taste is malty, bitter, smokey and coffee, quite sweet before the sharp bitter burnt malt finish. Pleasant stout.

Cask@Pigs Ear Fest. Pretty sweet it has to be said, and on the thin side of things. Some roastyness in the finish, but its very subtle. Pretty below average i thought.

A Sim rate (cask at Pig’s Ear BF): Sweet, caramel aroma that’s very rich. Roasty coffee flavour with a slightly bitter finish. OK, but not great. It’s a stout... is a stout... is a stout.

Cask at Pig’s Ear BF 2007. Coffee, some smokiness, but not overwhelming. Sourish finish.
