500 ml bottle, from The Cheese & Wine Shop, Darlington. Copper colour, large to moderate off-white head. Strong and pleasant aroma of malts, caramel, raisins, dark dried fruits, blackcurrants, a hint of tobacco. Fruity flavour, notes of raisins and blackcurrants, also notes of caramel malts, but the beer is not too sweet. Moderate but sufficient hops in the finish. Very drinkable.

Sweet sweet toffeeish doppelbock aroma with a wring of old sock, jellied red fruit, marzipan, Schlenkerla and oily hop. Chocolate coated caramel, walnut, waxy prune, malt loaf and leather touches. Robust finish with earthy hops and malt, roast and a dab of rauch. Tasty stuff, mingling brown ale and deep doppelbock maltiness.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 chriso (7063) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 1, 2006
Cask (gravity dispense) at Reading Beer Festival, April 2006. Judging from the two I tried there’s a bit of a theme to these Allendale beers. Quite dark coloured for a bitter. A mix of US and UK hop varieties. Malty backbone but rather more aromatic hop and bitterness than expected. This one has some caramel but, again, a quite pronounced, citric hop hit. Plenty of body and character. Quite impressed.

Cask@Peterborough Beer Festival, 2008. Thick dark brown looking beer. The aroma is strongly sweetly malty, with a touch of roasted’ness. The flavour is bitter, malty, smooth and slightly toffee. Overall a nice beer.

cask at Guildford Arms in Edinburgh - Pours dark amber and smells of caramel malt with a little hops. The flavor is mainly sweet malt with a bit of a hops bite. It’s medium bodied and has light bitterness in the finish. This brew is more fully flavored than the regular bitters.
