3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 reebtogi (3259) - Edmonton, Alberta, - AUG 17, 2011650mL bottle pours almost black with about an inch and a half of beige head settling to a fine lacing. Aromas of roasted malts and chocolate. Taste is moderately bitter with a long finish. Body is a little thin for a stout and carbonation is adequate. This stout would have earned higher marks with a little more substance in the body, but still a nice drinkable beer.

Brown head starts tight and big and falls to a nice thin layer. Leaves sticky lacing up the glass. Deep brown colour, nearly opaque. You can get a flicker of light through it to show it’s a clear beer. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate and some nuttiness. Mouth-feel is much thinner than expected, but a flavourful roasted/dark malts up front, almost burnt tasting or bitter chocolate/coffee at the end. A dry finish.

Thanks to reimer for this. Pours inky black with a moderate brown head that ends in a small ring. Aroma is roasted oatmeal and bitter dark chocolate. Taste is a little thin. I expected a little fuller mouthfeel. Nice roasted oatmeal and bitter chocolate.

UPDATED: APR 30, 2013 Pours a black, opaque with a large light brown head dissolving to a thin covering and loads the glass from top to bottom with sticky lace. Aroma is of roasted malt, dark chocolate, caramel and a touch of sweetness. Flavour consists of dark chocolate, dry roasted malts, light sweetness and finished with a mild hop/dark malt bitterness. Overall a good beer from a great brewery.

Delicious mix of sweet caramel and bready malt along with a spicy, only slightly bitter hopping. Very comparable to Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout.

This is a smooth stout. Chocolately, coffee notes, but the most notable characteristic is the smooth frothiness. Not a ton of flavour, but a nice stout, nonetheless.

A very good beer for those lucky enough to be able to get Alley Kat products. Positioned as a slightly heartier stout, with more body than a Guiness style, more similar to an Imperial Stout. However, it does not come with the higher alcohol content. It is a stout, so there is less in the aroma - who cares about it. Pours with a decent enough head for a carbonated bottle, that is reasonably creamy. It is a great tasting beer that is better than the famous Canadian (Quebec) alternative-St.Ambroise. Full taste, and you’ll want a second. Great beer overall.

Initial strong vinegar aroma. Maybe this has gone. Black in colour with a good frothy head and lace. Slight roasted malt, sharp bitter finish. Earth chocolate finish. I’m sure its past, this beer is probably much better.

Impenetrable black with brown head. Aromas of roasted grains and dark chocolate. In the mouth, my immediate observation is it seems pretty thin. There’s a bit of a vegetable note in there that seems a little out of place. Tastes experimental, but its very much on the right track!
