Bottle, shared with my brother-in-law. Murky yellow pour with a melted-marshmellow head that laces it’s way down the glass. Bold enticing hefe aroma of spicy banana and wheat, a little bubblegum. Classic flavours of banana, wheat, spices, with nuances of lemon, yeast, and bubblegum. Creamy texture. This is a difficult style to pull off, and AK has succeeded brilliantly. It ranks up there with Tree’s hefe among the best Canadian made hefeweizens I’ve tried. Excellent.

I put off drinking this one because I assumed it would suck. It doesn’t. Out of a dark room looking forwards a big window on a cloudy day gives this beer a lightly hazy bright yellow gold appearance with a small fizzy white cap that hugs the rim soon after. The banana and cloves show up quickly with a mulled orange aroma holding through the middle and the wheat rounds it out. The flavour is also quite good and is thankfully not a banana bomb. Very zippy carbonation greets you strongly on every sip. Orange and cloves, then more cloves then a citrus blast and a soft banana finish. Solid wheat, virtually zero bitterness, light herbal something. This has depth! I am shocked. Damn, this is fine. Good wheat back ground. Good clove. Good citrus. Good softness. Good beer.

Pour - a bright orange-yellow cloudy body with a thick three fingers of off white head which died to a thin cap. Tons of carbonation in this one. Aroma - a sweet malty nose with a prominent german hefe yeast and sweet lemony fruit. The wheat is not overpowering on the nose. Notes of clove, allspice, lemon and a bunch of banana. Taste - the middle is sweet with a predominant clove and banana taste. The finish is bitter with a aftertaste of German yeast and wheat malt. The lemon in the nose is more subtle in the taste. Palate - a medium bodied beer with a crisp and clean finish. Lively carbonation and a chewy sticky mouthfeel. Overall, a good hefe and a very enjoyable summer beer. Very refreshing,

This pours an extremely cloudy yellow, it has a 2 finger pure white head that falls to a thin cap. It has solid amount of carbonation and a bunch of fine lacing. On the nose I am getting wheat and some great banana notes. The flavor is somewhat similar to the aroma. I am picking up solid doses of wheat, instead of the banana I get citrus thrown into the mix. I can pick up some clove and spicy notes. It finishes with a little acidic notes from the citrus and some faint hops. It is a nice summer easy drinking beer.

650ml brown botlle. Hazy yellow pour with a huge white head. Good thick lacing. Big aroma of banana and other assorted fruit, some apple. Wheat flavour, lemony notes. Finishes with some light lemony bitterness and wheat. Light body and decent carbonation. Pretty straightforward hefe, tasty and better than some German examples I’ve had. Would gladly buy this again.

650mL bottle which is a part of a series of seasonal big bottles poured a hazy golden color with big white head settling to a nice lacing. Aromas of yeast and some spices. Taste is slightly sweet with some spices and yeast and a light hoppy finish. A nice hefe which was easy to drink and very enjoyable.

Single bottle purchased from Keg & Cork Wine & Spirits in Edmonton, AB on 07/22/2011. Colour: A nice blend of dark yellow and light orange with medium height pure white head. Nose: Hibiscus, flowery, banana split, bubble gum....very sweet. Taste: Medium sweet, light bitter, light sour. Sweet wheat that takes on a vanilla side. Small traces of ginger are evident. Some all-spice and orange juice make appearences. Fluttering flower on the finish. Very creamy mouth feel. Fights itself throughout and, despite its complex character, occasionally trips over its own feet. Still very appreciatable.

Bottle. Cloudy dark gold with a big big head. Spicy nose with strong cloves and a hint of banana. Easy drinker. Spice is light in body but carries on nicely in the aftertaste. More melon and a hint of tangerine rather than banana. Wheat softens the body. Have to search for the yeastiness on the palate. Some lemony tartness in the finish. Flavour doesn’t seem to carry the depth and oomph I’m looking for.

Hate to be so tough on Alley Kat again but I feel that they really need to up their game with the big bottle series. I can’t help but feel like they just go grab some random recipe for the style and whip it up. They need to take some time to put their own individual mark on these beers or, at the least, make an effort to have a stellar example of the style. This beer does not fit that bill. Looked great with the nice cloudy gold and had a very appealing aroma dominated by bananas and clove. The taste was a bit more of the same but was alarmingly weak and watery given the aroma. This beer made me struggle to identify the notes on the tongue as I felt like it tasted as if it was 2%. Good effort but you can do better Alley Kat.
