COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Occasional.
Bright Blade was the nickname of King Oswald (latterly to become St Oswald) who was slain at the Battle of Maserfelth, reputedly near Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan.
This golden ale is made with three hop varieties and arouses the taste buds with its ginger spice and lemon nose; which is followed by a satisfying aftertaste.

(Cask at GBBF, London, 8 Aug 2007) Golden yellow colour with greenish tinges, brief head. Fruity nose with citrus and distinctly spicy notes of ginger. Fruity, spicy taste with citrus and ginger. Rather sweet, not very bitter. Interesting, spicy beer.

Cask, Pembury Tavern. Very pale gold, nice snowy white cap. Lemon, ginger, thyme, lavender--quite a generous aroma. Delicate herbal hop flavor, bright toasty malt, lemony around the edges. Refreshing, full of character. Something green tea-like about it. Lingering ginger. Good on its own merit, extra praise for breaking out of the expected flavor range.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2007 Cask@The Pembury Tavern, Hackney. Quite sweet and gingery, too gingery for me. Ginger doesn’t work in beer. I had a later sample on the same day and noticed that it had improved a little bit, so i upped my score, which was a bit lower than the on i’m giving it.

Cask gravity at Pembury Tavern BF March 2007. Ginger, spice aroma. Gold colour with no head. I like ginger beers. This isn’t biscuity but more root ginger. I like it, and Duff is wrong. Nice spicey finish. It’s a very good ginger beer. Quite earthy stem ginger throughout.

A Sim rate (Gravity cask at the Pembury Tavern): Aroma is overpoweringly ginger - so much so that it’s a bit too much. Sweet and citric. Appearance is standard but a decent amber golden colour. Completely flat. Flavour is again ginger but with extra spices. Bit of a chai tea about it. Feel like this beer should accompany an nice Thai green curry.

Cask (gravity dispense) at St Albans Beer Festival, September 2006. Golden colour with a slight haze. Rather similar to the same brewery’s Young Pretender which I sampled just before. Plenty of spicy, aromatic hop character on the nose. In taste, maybe a touch sweeter and less resinous than the Young Pretender, but there’s a developing bitterness on the finish, leading to an ever so slightly sour aftertaste. Still a quite hoppy beer. The mouthfeel is light, maybe a touch thin. Decent stuff.
