4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 ladnewton (1147) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 19, 2009
Cask at the Wenlock Arms, london on 15th October 2009. Handsomely black with a creamy white head. Smoky aroma then exquisite and intense blend of bitter roasted malts. Creamy texture throuhg which the smokiness penetrates creating a multi-directional experience with this porter. A superb, first-class ale fully deserving of a high mark - recommended. No disrespect to any of the previous raters but all the 2’s and 3’s below refer to the bottled version - DO try the cask you will not be disappointed!
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Pyobon (742) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - OCT 16, 2009
Bottle. Deep black with reddish hue with no head. Porter burnt aroma. Medium body and carbonation. The flavour is pretty standard porter with an unpronounced foretaste, pehaps mildly tangy, with dark roast malt, almost burnt and a little sour. A reasonable Porter, which is not my favourite style.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 rauchbier (3409) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - OCT 8, 2009
Bottle, from Sainsburys Grimsby. Jet black, quickly disappearing beige head, moderate condition. Big sweet coffee and liquorice, roast barley and slight fruitiness in the nose, disappointingly thin and dry in the mouth with some roasted bitterness and low liquorice in the mix, gentle earthy bitterness in the finish with a slight fruitiness.
2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 bobinlondon (1216) - Harrow, Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 5, 2009
Bottle from Sainsbury’s. Almost black with a reluctant tan head. Liquorice and caramel dominate with subtle fruitiness. Good natural smooth carbonation.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 EFC1878 (315) - Manchester, Greater Manchester, ENGLAND - SEP 29, 2009
500ml bottle from Sainsbury’s. Black with initially large beige head that soon settles down to a thin film. Bit of chocolate malt in the aroma, tastes sweet chocolate with some burnt malts. ’Grainy’ sort of finish, bit too thin for my taste. Decent overall, though.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 hughie (3994) - Bedford, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - SEP 29, 2009
Bottle in Sainsburys BF ’09. Near black. Leathery liquorice aroma. Taste has some sour, dark plummy notes, a bit of ash and a mid bitter finish. Not a bad porter.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 imdownthepub (8547) - Banbury, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - SEP 23, 2009
Bottled, 500ml from Sainsburys at Banbury. Black with tan head. I was expecting a heavier beer than this proved to be, in fact it was a little on the thin side. There is a sweetish liquorice with a tangy fruitiness, blackcurrant, then just hints of a smokey dark roasted malt. Its reasonable enough.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 DonMagi (5598) - bantervile, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - SEP 21, 2009
Bottle from sainsburies had at home. Alround rating: Liquorice from start to finish, fairly roasted malt, perhaps a bit of fruity plum like fruit. The carbonation was very good, worth a note.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 harrisoni (11023) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - SEP 18, 2009
500ml bottle from the Sainsbury beer competition. Although it has a slight liquorice tang which I don’t normally go for this is a very drinkable beer. Yes a liquorishy dark beer. Some warm malts. As this isn’t my normal favourite flavour it wins me over in its fullness in the mouth and the coffee and choc. Ok
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 weaselkenievil (1094) - Cheshire, ENGLAND - SEP 16, 2009
Bottle from Sainsburys. Dark brown / black with tan head. Roasted malt, coffee and choc, little tobacco, light bitterness. Bit light and thin mouthfeel but ok.
