Our Biere de Chocolat celebrates the long and lauded history of chocolate production in San Francisco. Our aim was to create a beer bursting with cocoa flavors and aromas, balancing sweet and savory to create a complex but quaffable chocolate brew. To accomplish this we partnered with Dandelion Chocolate in San Francisco to create this rich brew brimming with chocolate character. Working with the unique flavors of Dandelion’s single-source beans, we created this decadent beer by layering in smoked and dark-roasted malts with citrusy Ivanhoe hops from Clearlake, CA. Finally, we added a blend of hand-roasted cocoa beans sourced from Madagascar and Río Caribe, Venezuela. The Madagascar beans add bright berry-cocoa flavors, while the Río Caribe adds dark chocolate and bourbon notes. A touch of vanilla rounds out the supporting flavors to create an eminently drinkable beer that is a chocolate lover’s beer through and through.

Bottle at Charlie’s place in Encinitas. Pours clear brown with a creamy beige head. Ashy roast aroma. Light sweet flavor with further ash, chalky cocoa, earth, tobacco and dirty leaves. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Dry, burnt malt finish with charred leaves, tobacco, bitter baking cocoa and dirt. So so.

On tap at Church Key in SF last week. Nice roasty malts and darker cocoa powder smell on the aroma. Flavors bring out a nice sweeter chocolate up front, while the mid-palate has a bit of vanilla tastes going on. The heartier flavors come out towards the finish with a nice burnt toast roast and burnt chocolate. Really enjoyed this. Let it warm up for sure!

Bottle from Pizza Port bottle shop. Pours black with a half inch of khaki foam. Leaves a lot of lacing in the glass. Has some dark chocolate on the nose. The taste has this chalky bitterness that is off putting when paired with chocolate. Not feeling this one.

12 oz. bottle from bytemesis- thanks again, Mike! Pours a deep, mostly opaque coffee brown with a small khaki head that leaves wisps of film atop the beer and small spots of lace in the glass. The aroma has a surprising hop character, with cacao nibs, citrus, vanilla, tobacco, coffee, and baker’s chocolate. The flavor is a little muted, though it offers some earthy hops, cacao nibs, toasted vanilla, tobacco, florals, and some roast at the end. Really dries up late. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation. Falls just a little flat, but an interesting beer.
