COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Biere de Chocolat celebrates the long and lauded history of chocolate production in San Francisco. Our aim was to create a beer bursting with cocoa flavors and aromas, balancing sweet and savory to create a complex but quaffable chocolate brew. To accomplish this we partnered with Dandelion Chocolate in San Francisco to create this rich brew brimming with chocolate character. Working with the unique flavors of Dandelion’s single-source beans, we created this decadent beer by layering in smoked and dark-roasted malts with citrusy Ivanhoe hops from Clearlake, CA. Finally, we added a blend of hand-roasted cocoa beans sourced from Madagascar and Río Caribe, Venezuela. The Madagascar beans add bright berry-cocoa flavors, while the Río Caribe adds dark chocolate and bourbon notes. A touch of vanilla rounds out the supporting flavors to create an eminently drinkable beer that is a chocolate lover’s beer through and through.

12 oz bottle poured into my Dogfish Head snifter. Pours a dark brown almost black color with a thick fluffy khaki head that leave great lacing. Smells of chocolate, caramel amd roasted malt. Tastes of the same things in the smell with the chocolate being the most noticable. Mouthfeel is creamy light and oily with light carbonation and a dry finish. Pretty tasty chocolate beer. not as good as Southern Tier’s but slighly better than Sam Adams chocolate bock. I would drink this all the time if it cost less.

Medium dark brown head. Opaque black body goes hazy deep dark at edges. Perfumy milk chocolate aroma with papery notes. Dryish chocolatey papery taste with burnt plastic notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish chocolatey perfumy aftertaste with mineraly syrupy notes. It’s a bit too artificial and strange for me. (0.355l bottle, from Fish & Beer, Copenhagen.)

355 ml bottle @ Gaasa, May 2014. Black body with a small, dense beige head. Aroma is mainly chocolate with a hint of roast, very delicious and promising. Flavor has dark chocolate, light roasted coffee, vanilla and decent bitterness. Complex within the chocolate specter. Full body and long lasting aftertaste. One of the best chocolate beers I have tasted.

On tap at 10 East - I am a sucker for a great chocolate beer. The two Sam’s come to mind when I think of great chocolate beers (Smith with the Organic Chocolate Stout and Adams with the Chocolate Bock). So comparatively speaking, this failed. But on it’s own it’s not bad. Way, way to thin for my liking. An aroma of semi-sweet chocolate chip cookies, buttered toast and light vanilla. The flavor is strange...there is some light chocolate found, but it’s very tea like...herbal, some dust...like a chocolate tea w/o any body. I really enjoyed my last Almanac beer, but this was lacking.

Bottle at Hall Toll, Stavanger . Pours clear dark ruby with a small tanned head. Aroma is intense chocolate, vanilla , cocoa and weak roast, lovely. Taste is moderate sweet, more clean dark chocolate, cocoa and sleek vanilla, creamy half oily mouthfeel ,lovely for the sweet tooth amongst us.

This beer has been sitting in my fridge tempting me for months. Pours dark chocolate with appropriate amount of dark tan head. Scent is like a mocha coffee. Flavor goes sweet to mildly bitter. Thickish with medium carbonation. Bottle - Received in Trade
