Our Biere de Chocolat celebrates the long and lauded history of chocolate production in San Francisco. Our aim was to create a beer bursting with cocoa flavors and aromas, balancing sweet and savory to create a complex but quaffable chocolate brew. To accomplish this we partnered with Dandelion Chocolate in San Francisco to create this rich brew brimming with chocolate character. Working with the unique flavors of Dandelion’s single-source beans, we created this decadent beer by layering in smoked and dark-roasted malts with citrusy Ivanhoe hops from Clearlake, CA. Finally, we added a blend of hand-roasted cocoa beans sourced from Madagascar and Río Caribe, Venezuela. The Madagascar beans add bright berry-cocoa flavors, while the Río Caribe adds dark chocolate and bourbon notes. A touch of vanilla rounds out the supporting flavors to create an eminently drinkable beer that is a chocolate lover’s beer through and through.

Fabulous chocolaty goodness! Pours dark almost black and with some coaxing produced a fairly dense tan head. Chocolate and coffee dominate the flavors. Almanac really did a great job on this one.

12 oz. bottle, pours a deep dark brown with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out lots of faded chocolate, some oxidation and bready malt. Flavour is surprisingly not oxidized, with lots of dry chocolate upfront and dry bready malt. Has held up pretty well. Nothing overly complex but it works.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a nice, single centimetre tall light brown head that fades relatively fast. Aroma of lactose, roasted malt, prunes, raisins, light vanilla and a hint of oats. Light-bodied; Mild malty flavour with some oats and dry vanilla in the mix and a touch of lactose and cream sweetness. Aftertaste is simple with the oats, roasted malt, touch of coffee and perhaps a very light note of chocolate - not much at all though. Overall, a pretty poor beer - something that is lacking in almost every characteristic, but especially with flavour and even more so with body - this is THIN. If you have a bottle of this stocked away somewhere like I did, it’s best to drink it now, because I think it’s best days were behind it - this is not worth cellaring at all. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Hollingshead’s Deli in Orange, California on 02-May-2013 for US$2,99 sampled at home in Washington on 12-March-2016.

Bottle split at ChrisO tasting, London. It pours a brown body with ruby edges and light tan head. Aroma is semi-sweet with milk chocolate, vanilla ice cream, caramel, roasted malts. Taste has more roasted malts, chocolate fudge, caramel, biscuit. Light to medium bodied with soft to good carbonation. Overall, uninspiring

Negra opaca.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is vanilla, dark chocolate, and roast. Medium mouth, chewy, dark chocolate, roast, bready malt, light bitterness, good.

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Czarne, opalizujące z beżową pianą. Intensywny aromat czekolady. W smaku czekolada, nuty kawy i wanilii. Kwaśność z połączenia nut kawy oraz gorzkiej czekolady. Pozostawia przyjemny posmak w ustach.

Medium dark brown head. Opaque black body goes hazy deep dark at edges. Perfumy milk chocolate aroma with papery notes. Dryish chocolatey papery taste with burnt plastic notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish chocolatey perfumy aftertaste with mineraly syrupy notes. It’s a bit too artificial and strange for me. (0.355l bottle, from Fish & Beer, Copenhagen.)

355 ml bottle @ Gaasa, May 2014. Black body with a small, dense beige head. Aroma is mainly chocolate with a hint of roast, very delicious and promising. Flavor has dark chocolate, light roasted coffee, vanilla and decent bitterness. Complex within the chocolate specter. Full body and long lasting aftertaste. One of the best chocolate beers I have tasted.
