The life of a Kentucky oak barrel is one of giving: first to bourbon, then to dark strong ales, and finally we inoculate it with our Dogpatch Sour culture and fill it with robust porter. This inky black ale blends flavors of coffee, chocolate, dried fruit and Kentucky Bourbon with a pleasant tartness and funk. Pair with hearty winter stews or freshly shucked oysters.

Deep dark brown with a two-finger tan head and nice lace. Aromas of bourbon, roasted coffee, chocolate, dark fruit and port. Flavor follows, as bittersweet chocolate allows for notes of bourbon to poke through. Tart fruitiness as well. Full body, minimal carbonation, creamy mouthfeel and a boozy finish.

Pitch black and completely opaque with a two finger frothy beige head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Good retention, lingering for the duration of the pour with streaks of soapy lacing clinging to the glass on the way down. Sweet yet funky aroma with strong acidity and charred oak. Porter notes are overpowered by the wild yeast and barrel character. Subtle bourbon with a touch of spicy spirit and dry oak stave. Porter notes are unfortunately overshadowed by funk and acidity. Only faint roasted and sweet malts but they are hard to pick up. Slight acetic balsamic character as it warms. Was expecting more complexity but just smells sour and funky. All wild bugs, acidity and barrel. Light body with funky yeast, tart acidity, acetic vinegar and charred wood. Again, the porter characteristics are blown away by the funk and sour acidity. Citric acid and acetic vinaigrette dominate the palate. Strong wood/toothpick flavor but not much in the way of bourbon. Disappointing one dimensional. Generically sour with not much else going on. Bleh!

375ml bottle pours out dark brown almost black topped with a dark tan head. Nose is roast malts chocolate vanilla barrel bourbon tartness funk and some wine notes. Taste is more of the roast malts chocolate tartness vanilla bourbon barrel oak and a nice end. Normally I am not a big fan of sour porters or stouts. But this one is nice.

Bottle from robby, thanks man. Really nice aroma. Nice sour smell with some sort of stout backbone. Vanilla with some alcohol. Coca-Cola appearance with a caramel colored head. This tastes really amazing. This is elite. One of the best beers I’ve had in awhile.

Negra profunda, dos dedos de espuma. Aroma Agrio. Sabor Agrio que se come todo lo demás. Debajo debe haber cosas interesantes, pero hay que estar preparado para soportar el sabor agrio agrio. Realmente SOUR. No es para mi. Lo siento.

Had this at an Almanac tap takeover at Uncle Henry’s Deli in Downey. Pours dark brown to black with a thin mocha head. Flavor is molasses, oak, not really any bourbon. Sounds is mild. Really nice beer. Just great.

Unique brew. Bourbon oak and roast with some lactic aroma. Flavor has same sour lemon with equal roast and coffee.

Bottle. Dark copper brown, beige head. Vinous, sour, woody aroma. Flavours of cocoa, yoghurt, sour cherries, wood. Finish is very dry. Body is actually deceptively light. Moderately sour so as to be quenching more than puckering. Nice, but could use a bigger body and more malt structure.

[2/13/15] Draught sample at Almanac & Friends Sourfest at Public House in San Francisco. Dark brown to black. Roasty and sour aroma with lots of fruitiness, vanilla and a bit of vinegar. Roasty flavor, sour and fruity, with a bit of vanilla. Medium-bodied.

Bottle. Nose of grapes, chocolate, yogurt, wine, vanilla. Pitch black with pretty lace. Acidic punch in the mouth is more than you expect from the nose. Lemon, grapefruit, grape. less of the dark character, more sour. Great crisp carbonation. Love it.
