COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Chipotle Smoked Stout is the result of a collaboration with Chefs Nick Balla and Courtney Burns of Bar Tartine. Tartine’s Hungarian/Eastern European-inspired cuisine overflows with creativity and originality. This stems from their dedication to creating everything in-house, the old-fashioned way. This includes smoking peppers and making their own paprika. Nick shared some of his house-made chipotles with us and we fell in love—smokey and sweet with a delicate heat and deep intoxicating aroma—we knew we had to build a beer around them. Inspired by these chipotles, we combined them with Cherry-wood smoked malt and black and chocolate roasted malts to create a rich, deep beer with just a hint of chipotle heat hiding in the finish. Pair this 9% sipper with BBQ, goulashes and whatever is on special at Bar Tartine

Draft at the Encinitas Ale House - Encinitas, CA. Pours black-brown with a frohty, beige cap. Nice beer. Mellow chipotle spice present with moderate roasted malts, dry chocolate. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Smoked malts to finish with further restrained chili heat, a bit more dusty cocoa, modest roasted malt sweetness. Solid.

Tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours beautifully black with a big Guinness tan head. Smoky, peppery aroma. Not extreme tho. Med body or better. Flavor goes smoky, delicious chocolate, then peppery. Finishes just somewhat hot and smoothly, creamily chocolate. Smooth burnt malt all the time. Fantastic.

Draft at Uber. This was a surprise to me. I’ve been shying away from smoked beers lately, since my last few encounters have been with liquid bandaids. However, this one works really well for me. Opaque, dark brown pour. Aroma: ash, roast, chocolate, coffee. Taste: campfire, with nice chili pepper at the back of the throat in the finish -- not overpowering, just really well-integrated into the rest of the experience. Reasonably dry, full body, average carbonation. Overall: Too bad it was last call -- I’d happily drink another.

On tap @ Strong Ale 2013. Black pour with a khaki head. Aroma is pretty roast forward with a lot of smoke, soap, and cocoa powder. Mild head, coffee, and a touch of earth. Flavor is not really my cup of tea. Really soapy and smokey. Mild spice/heat, lots of roasted malt, and some earthy bitterness. Pass.

Tap at Strong Ale Fest. Low haze deep red pour. Nice latte foam. Nose is gamey, raw animal, deer, slight plastic. Pretty nuts. Taste is richer/waxy dark chocolate, mild heat from the chipotles, dried guajillo chilies. Palate is just mildly chalky. Still, this has some serious potential. I hope they continue to improve this beer and get it out there.
