COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We love blackberries. Tart, sweet and complex but guarded by thorny branches, these alluring fruit have been a favorite of ours since we added them to our very first beer. This sour blonde ale is infused with loads of coastal Blackberries from Swanton Berry Farm in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains and aged in wine barrels for many months. Pair with duck dishes and summer salads.

opaque between peach pink and carrot red color, little lacing round the edges. effervescent scent, yeast, sweet honeysuckle, cardboard, taste is hard too put my finger on, light, getting some berry, reminding me of their rasperry offering last summer. I don’t know, much like a fruity wine.

Bottle. Light funky nose, with a bit of overripe dates and light berries. Peachy strawberry color, slick, with no head. Very tart initial, rhubarb, lemon, and modulates into a fair dryness. Thin body. Tartness is quite something here, but it is tasty, indeed.

375ml bottle opened up at the beginning of the Ottawa 2014 year end tasting. Dirty and hazy orange with an off white head. Fresh blackberries, grass, acidic and sour, dry, lemon rind, fairy refreshing with a moderate carbonation and body, nice finish.

UPDATED: JAN 2, 2015 Pours a hazy orange (golden) with a small white head that quickly receeds into a really small rim that leaves almost no lacing. Its robe is filled with a lot of nice bubble streams, though. Nose is of vinegar first, a little burn awaits you if you sniff too hard. Some fruits in the background but it is hard to get past the vinegar... Ah, another american sour! Taste is less sour than expected, offers some fruity vinegar. Well, it is still really puckering so I’m not sure why this first sip wasn’t too sour. Makes my mouth water heavily. Some wine. Body is medium and so is carbonation. Overall an OK american sour... Not sure why I’m rating this so low, maybe they just don’t age well at all?

P.S. It got a little better as it warmed and when I poured everything (including lees) into the glass. Not amazing but still a little better

Bottle... Pours cloudy and golden with no head, but a fuchsia ring floats atop the brew. The bouquet offers blackberries, oak and a subtle layer of funkiness. Light to medium-bodied with jazzy carbonation. The flavor is sour and fruity, boasting loads of blackberries. Tart, moderately dry finish. Bottle courtesy of richiesd!

Bottle: Poured a cloudy dirty beige color ale with a small foamy head. Aroma of tart and sour notes with hint of blackberry is quite enjoyable. Taste is also dominated by tart and sour notes with hints of blackberries. Some vinous notes are also noticeable but I would not say that oak plays a major role. Body is full with limited filtration and good carbonation.

Lightly purple blush on cloudy yellow. Standard Almanac nose and flavors, but nice dry blackberry fruit in the flavors which are often lost in a lot of these Almanac beers for me. Tasty if not a stand out from most of their other golden sours.

TheGoldenChalice (18) - The Garden of the Beer Gods, North Carolina, USA - NOV 25, 2014
Served in a Teku straight from the bottle, aged for ~8-10m after purchase. Aroma - inviting aroma that reeks of white wine barrels and sour berries. Impressed. Appearance - cloudy, hazy, orangish, opaque hue that reminds me of the appearance of Westbrook’s Gose. Berry residue settles @ bottom of the glass. Taste - I have to admit -- I have not had many blackberry sours. I have had a decent number of world class sours, but very few blackberry sours. That said, this is hands down delicious and unlike other sours I have encountered. The blackberry flavor is subtle, but evident, especially as the beer’s astringency shines through with each sip. The white wine barrels dovetail brilliantly with the blackberries, which augment the tartness delightfully well. Overall, I am extremely happy I drank this beer now. I could not have asked for anything more out of it. I appreciate all of the craftsmanship that went into this one, and highly recommend this to any sour fan/collector.
