Citrus and beer have always made a great pair, ever since the first lemon wedge was added to a cold wheat beer. Here we expand on that tradition in a new way, melding the intensely aromatic zest of Buddha’s Hand citrons with the bracing tartness of Bergamot oranges in a sour blonde ale aged in wine barrels. Pair with sushi or flakey white fish or contrast with earthy roasted root vegetables.

Bottle to snifter This is the third one of these I’ve had because I kept drinking it and thinking that I’d already had it (Farmers Reserve 4) and it wasn’t as good as I’d remembered. I figured out why, so I grabbed another before leaving California. Aroma is intensely lemon, orange, and crabapple, with a hidden caramel and molasses sweetness hovering in the background. It pours a translucent yellowish amber with a 1 cm creamy white head that is constantly moving due to the numerous bubbles arising from below. Taste is lemony sour, but not the overwhelmingly puckering sourness I got from FR4. There’s also orange, orange rind, agave and a slight syrup at the end. I know I kept referencing FR4, but this one kicks ass too.

Bottle: Extremely hazy, burnt yellow body with an off-white, nearly gray tinted thin film & skinny ring on top. Mish-mash of lemon, orange, grapefruit, & generic citrus on the nose. A hint of white wine & slightly vinous oak (yes, that same character that I get in many of these beers). A hint of drying must in the back-end. Flavor is mostly sour lemon flesh & white grape. Heavily citric with a bit of robust vine presence underneath. Slight tannins from the barrel with a very small hint of must. Lemon-lime spritz towards the finish with a kiss of light acidity. Crisp, dry, just like the others. A nice sour ale.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Liquor Max Loveland. Pours a somewhat hazy, golden orange appearance with a spritzy, tan head that dissipates quickly. Quite a bit of funk, tart lemons, lemon zest, green apples, and some vanilla / oak in the aroma. Pretty high acidity. Moderate sweetness. Low bitterness. Medium body. Lemon-lime soda flavor. Spritzy carbonation. Pretty high sourness. Nice fruit flavor. Very nice citrusy after taste. Pretty chill brew.

Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow from the bottle with dissipating fluffy white head that leaves light lace. Aroma is funk on funk, lime dirty barnyard hay, slight lemon, but mostly "dirty goat balls". Taste is way more toward the citrus, with nice funky sour back end. Wow, really nice.

This bottle arrived today is part of the mail order from out West. Appearance is very average with a short-lived head no lace and hazy amber color. Aroma is bread dough citrus vinegar yeast. For the elaborate description and exotic ingredients listed I sure don't get much of that in the flavor just mostly lacto citric tart, barest suggestion of sweetness and that's about it. Body is okay. I'm kind of disappointed. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle at home with the wife. Pour is clear golden with a small white head that quickly dissipated. Citrusy, biscuity, slightly funky, light pepper, fruit skins, and doughy aroma. Taste is fresh lemons and limes, light salt, biscuit, urine, lacto, and vanilla with a big sour finish. Light body with fizzy carbonation. Very citrus and lactic heavy. Another tasty sour offering from almanac but could use a little more balance.

375mL bottle, pours a cloudy golden yellow with a tiny white head. Aroma brings out moderate funk, with citrus and white wine barrel notes. Flavour brings out oranges and citrus, with a lovely white wine oak barrel accentuation that creates a nice dry tartness on the finish. Complex, dry, oaky and light funky. Wonderful stuff from Almanac.

Bottle thanks to Ontape ! Pours a slightly hazy yellow golden color with a finge rof white fizzy foam. Nose has layers of citrus pith, spiced orange, vinous wood and rustic grain. Palate follows the nose with nice tight acidity and layers of sweet citrus and lingering funky citrus pith. Thirst quenching, not all that complex but Id drink a sixer :)

Tasted on 8/28/14 from a capped 375mL bottle, big thanks to Alex for picking this up for me. Pours hazy bright orange with an average white head that completely disappears after some time. The nose is tart and very sour with tons of lemon, a touch of bitter orange peel, vinous oak, and some spicy bread malt. The flavor is just as bracingly sour citron, the same vinous oak, fruity orange and peel, and the spicy character coming through as white peppercorn. The body is medium and plenty tannic with just under average carbonation and a long vinous oak, nicely sour, and spicy white peppercorn finish. This is very good.
