COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The difference between a stout and a porter is a fuzzy grey area. We are not quite sure if this is either… This dry beer deliciously brewed with chocolate malt and two crystal malts to give it a strong malty backbone. If you like dark chocolate you will love this beer.

On tap at the brewery. Comes dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of malt and chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, and caramel. Something not quite right here.

On tap @ Alpha Brewing. Dark brown pour with a khaki head. Smells like grape juice and chocolate. Sugary sweetness. Some roasted malt, a hint of coffee, and some earthy hops. Flavor is really, really sweet. Tons of grape, chocolate syrup, and caramel. Light coffee and roasted malt bitterness. Some molasses and a touch of earthy hops.

Sampled at Alpha Brewing during RBSG. Pours a deep brown color with white head. Roasty, nutty, malty flavors. Better than others at Alpha

Taster on tap at the brewery. Mostly clear red color, slight brown. Thin ring of off-white khaki head. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Some light chocolate aroma, metallic, light spice. Mediocre. Moderate sweet taste, light bitter, dry finish. OK but not much to it all, and light metallic spicy flavors that don’t really belong. Meh. Light acidic bite at the end, not a fan.

On tap @ Alpha. Pours a reddish brown appearance with a tan head. Caramel, nutty, light chocolate nose. A touch watery. Toasted caramel malty, herbal flavor. Bleh.

Tasted on tap at the brewery tasting room. It poured a mostly clear dark reddish brown colour with thin but persistent foam. I agree with phaleslu, this is a fairly non-descript brown ale, lacking the desirable traits of a good porter or stout. It was caramelly, dry, and toasty. A little mushy and oxidized, perhaps it was at the end of its serving life. It had an odd yogurty sourness in my opinion, so I asked the owner if there might be a mild infection in the lines, but he tasted it and said "no, it always tastes like that, it’s the kind of chocolate flavour we’re shooting for" so take that as you will. It wasn’t bad, just not delicious in my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

Braudog (5743) - Hampton, Virginia, USA - AUG 29, 2013
Draft sample at the brewery. This lacks any oomph whatsoever, but another cleanly made beer, even. As all the beers I’ve had here, it’s thin. They advertise "dark chocolate?" Hardly. But not much to say about it. (#5230, 8/29/2013)

jandd1983 (2566) - Florissant, Missouri, USA - JUL 15, 2013
Sampled at the brewpub. It poured a clear light brown color with a small off-white head. The aroma was a little chocolatey malt with a touch of light hops. The taste was a little too thin on the flavor, but there’s a nice chocolatey and lightly nutty quality to it. It was light bodied, a little thin, with fizzy carbonation.

phaleslu (6509) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAY 13, 2013
Draft in a sampler at the brewpub. Pours a brownish amber, mostly see-through, with a small off-white head. Toast, brown sugar, caramel, raisins, and candied nuts. Light-bodied, with a thin, sweet mouthfeel and low carbonation. Fairly weak for a porter/stout; more like a brown ale.

Pours a rich but clear dark brown. As billed, it has some obvious chocolate flavor (from the malt?). Very smooth. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
