COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Captain is leader of a fire crew. This beer takes charge of your taste buds with its rich flavor. Roasty malt character that has hints of chocolate and coffee which balances the smooth, velvety finish. The thick, creamy head lasts and lasts, leaving lace in your glass as your beer disappears. This beer pairs well with food. Great with dinner or as breakfast or even with a rich vanilla-bean ice cream.

Bottle to glass. Pours a deep brown color with a creamy tan head. Aroma is light burnt roasted malts, slightly smoky, touch of cocoa. Flavor has a nice light chocolate, burnt roasted malts. Medium body with a lingering smoky burnt roasted malts. Decent.

22 oz. bottle shared by Willrunforbeer. Chimay goblet dark. Down with light deep ru y highlights. Aroma is caramel, dark fruits of (plum, raisins) and perhaps molasses.

Flavor is much the same as the aroma with mild chocolate in the backend. My one huge complaint is the thin watery texture. Mildly astringent but not distracting. I wouldn’t really seek this out again.

Bottle from trade. Thanks michaelinwa! Pours nearly black with a beige head. Aroma is dark coffee, toffee. Flavor follows, some dark chocolate too. Mild overextracted coffee bitter in the finish.

Ratings are correct below, but I changed some ratings above to make the final rating as correct as possible with Beer Advocate’s "revamped" ratings. The 3.76 overall is correct. Type: 22-oz. bottle Glass: Manzanita pint glass From: Alpine Beer Company Pub in Alpine, Calif. Price: $4.99 Purchased: Dec. 18, 2014 Consumed: Dec. 18, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured a pitch black color with two fingers of tan, frothy head. Great layered, spiderweb, foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Good retention all the way down. (Sight - 4.38) Smelled toffee, caramel, roasty nuts, dark chocolate, light hazelnut, espresso, dark chocolate milk, faint vanilla, coffee malts and chocolate ice cream. (Smell - 3.75) Tasted a tad better than the nose, pretty good actually. Got dark chocolate, roasty coffee beans, roasted nuts, toffee, caramel, light Rolos candy, espresso, vanilla beans, chocolate ice cream, light smokinees, some bitter crayon and chocolate syrup. (Taste - 3.75) Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, bitter finish. (Feel - 3.63) A pretty good stout overall. Initially liked the taste, but not as good as I thought after a few sips. (Overall - 3.75) 3.76 85 B+

On tap at the brewery. Dark brown pour with a tan head. Dark roasted malt aromas. Taste follows suit with baker’s chocolate and muted caramel undercurrents. A bit hoppy, but with a good body and mouthfeel

On tap at the brewpub in Alpine. Appearance: Clear dark-red brown but opaque in the glass; the decent looking head soon reduces to a thin ring. Essentially no lacing. Aroma: appealing mix of medium and dark malts with a hint of caramel. Flavor: lightly sweet; ample dark roasted malts; a touch of coffe in the aftertaste and a hint of molasses earlier on.. Feel: Medium-light body with low but lively carbonation.

Got in a trade with swingracex. 22 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy tan head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, oats, light char, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt, oats, and light earthy hops; with good strength. Taste of milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, oats, light char, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Slight roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, oats, light char, herbal, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of dark/roasted malt, oats, and light earthy hop flavors; with a nice roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice oatmeal stout. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt, oats, and light earthy hop flovors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
