COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Captain is leader of a fire crew. This beer takes charge of your taste buds with its rich flavor. Roasty malt character that has hints of chocolate and coffee which balances the smooth, velvety finish. The thick, creamy head lasts and lasts, leaving lace in your glass as your beer disappears. This beer pairs well with food. Great with dinner or as breakfast or even with a rich vanilla-bean ice cream.

On tap at PP Carlsbad on 12/1/06: Pours a mostly opaque black with dark brown edges and a thin ring of tan head. Aroma of dry roasty and slightly smoked dark malts. Starts slightly sweet and caramely with a good amount of dark chocolate toward a drier, earthy finish. A pretty standard stout, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Draft at the brewpub. Pours pitch black with faint mahogany edges and a two finger light beige head that slowly fades into  a  lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Slightly roasted dark malt aroma with a good balance of sweet chocolate and darker roasted notes. Hints of smokey meat, roast coffee bean and dark chocolate along with caramel and toffee.  Some lactic sugar with faint hops. Medium bodied but on the fuller end with a good balance of sweet and roasted malt notes. Slight creamy texture and not as smokey as the aroma suggests. Hints of toast, dark chocolate, coffee and oatmeal along with some creamy, silky chocolate.  Not overly roasted, acrid or but. Well balanced and easy to drink.

While it wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t anything I’d spend money on again. Mediocre stout imho.

A - Pours a dark black with a hint of brown and a finger of frothy chocolate colored head. The head fades at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lace. S - Aroma is a mix of roasted milk chocolate malts, some coffee, and a bit of earthy hop. Touch of sweetness to it to. T - Starts off with some roasted chocolate malts with a bit of milk chocolate sweetness and some light coffee flavor. Through the middle, some more roasted flavors come through with some stronger coffee and a bit of earthy hops. The finish is a mix of roasted chocolate malts, bitter-coffee, and a bit of sweetness. M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a bitter-coffee and dry finish. D - Very drinkable. Really nice stout with lots of balanced flavors, but still on the lighter side and fairly sessionable.

Thanks to ffejherb for sharing this one with us at a recent tasting. A - Pours dark brown with a small one finger tall tan head leaving light streaks of lace down the glass. S - Smells of dark roasted malt, coffee, and a bit of chocolatey sweetness. A bit one diminutional really. T - Starts off with quite a bit of dark roasted malt slowly giving way to a mix of day old coffee grounds and a bit of chocolatey sweetness. Maybe a bit of maple coming through toward the end of the glass. Finish is pretty roasty, lingering for quite awhile. M - Heavy body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Roasty feel initially growing a bit thin toward the end of my glass. O - This one was not too bad. It never really wowed me in any way but it was still pretty solid. A good pallet cleanser after all the sours we had.
