On draught at Alpine. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with an eggshell head. Aroma is resiny hops, caramel malts, and dark fruit. Sweet with hoppy bitterness. Full bodied and sticky. Very good American barleywine that isn’t over-the-top bitter.

Tap at the brewery. Rating #34. This smelled awesome, unfortunately the flavor wasn’t up to the level of the aroma, still very good overall though. (2681)

Poured on tap at ABC. Caramel color with no head. Tons of malt, caramel, honey and toffee. Mouth feel is a little like syrup. Very sweet all the way through and very tasty indeed

StefanSD (2085) - Lakeside, California, USA - DEC 31, 2010
taster at the brewery. Pours a honey gold color with a small white head. The aroma is sweet with caramel. Taste is that of a caramel malt bomb; lots of caramel, toffee, sherry and some biscuit. Palate is thick and syrupy with soft carbonation. Finishes long and sweet with lingering toffee. Overall: Very sweet, but there is a place in the world for sweet beers and this one should make the grade.

Clear reddish golden with almost no head. Sweet caramel andvanilla aroma and taste with a toffee alcoholic finish.

On tap at Alpine Beer Co. Poured a nice orange color with little head. Smells of toffee and burnt sugar. Tastes of caramel, toffee, some dried fruits and a nice balance of hoppiness in the end. This is Good, but when it emerges from the barrels it becomes Great. The Great has much more sweetness and less hoppiness and tons of bourbon flavor.

papajohn (1249) - San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA - JUL 7, 2010
On tap at O’Brien’s: Deep amber color with a fine, creamy off-white head. Aroma is rich, sweet and fruity. Flavor starts over-ripe tropical fruit and caramel followed by orangy/citrus flavors and a lingering, dry orange rind bitter finish. Full body is smooth and creamy with moderate carbonation. Alcohol well hidden, but gives a quick buzz.

On cask at O’Briens in SD. Wow one of the best barleywines I have had, tastes like butterscotch. Pours a dark amber, very viscous. Thick mouth feel with little carbo. Taste of dark fruits, caramel malts and leaves a nice hoppy bitterness on the pallet.

On tap at O’Briens on a Friday. Dark brownish hues with a slight off white head. Full smooth body. Flavors abound with sweet dark malt and dried fruit. Toffee, caramel, and some vanilla. A bit of hop bite lurking in the back. Nice barley wine.

On cask at O’Briens. Drank this while watching the Chargers choke it big time (again) in the AFC divisional playoff game 2010. I heard about this beer a long time ago, and I never had the chanced to try it at the brewery. Opaque bronze color, some light creamy head. Some chunks of yeast floating around from cask conditioning. Mellow aroma, with lots of grass and hops. Nice smooth tones of caramel malt show through. Nice balanced flavor, nothing to spectacular though. Medium bitterness, full coating body. Surprisingly easy to drink despite the high ABV!
