4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Glass: 8-oz. snifter
From: Alpine Beer Company Pub
Purchased: Oct. 4, 2014
Consumed: Oct. 4, 2014
Misc.: BA calls Good as 17 percent ABV, but I remember seeing it as 14 percent in the pub. Could just be this yearís batch.
Poured a dark caramel, auburn, semi-clear color with 1-to-2 fingers of khaki cream head when I got it. Light streams of bubbles coming from the bottom of the glass. Good amount of uneven lacing on the sides of the glass. Average-to-above average retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 4.27)
Smelled rye hops, sweetened iced tea, Citra hops, caramel, toffee, purple grape, light grape juice, plum, sugary candied lemon and some late booziness with big whiffs. (Smell - 4.15)
Wow was my first thought with the taste. Then it was this might be the smoothest barelywine Iíve ever had, not even taking into the account of the high ABV. Pretty close to the smell. Candied sugary lemon, sweetened iced tea, plum, purple grape, caramel, toffee and crisp rye hops. (Taste - 4.45)
Medium body. Oily texture. Medium carbonation. Long, smooth finish. Alcohol is well-hidden. (Feel - 4.87)
Just a fantastic barleywine. So damn smooth. (Overall - 4.55)

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Raw, unaged 14% barley wine at the brewery. Hazy bronze color with a surprisingly long lasting tan head. Very light aroma of sweet malt and a hint of booze. Wow thatís a huge flavor. Sweet syrupy but not offensive. Somehow this is not hot. This must be amazing as great.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On draught at Alpine. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with an eggshell head. Aroma is resiny hops, caramel malts, and dark fruit. Sweet with hoppy bitterness. Full bodied and sticky. Very good American barleywine that isnít over-the-top bitter.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
taster at the brewery. Pours a honey gold color with a small white head. The aroma is sweet with caramel. Taste is that of a caramel malt bomb; lots of caramel, toffee, sherry and some biscuit. Palate is thick and syrupy with soft carbonation. Finishes long and sweet with lingering toffee. Overall: Very sweet, but there is a place in the world for sweet beers and this one should make the grade.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at Alpine Beer Co. Poured a nice orange color with little head. Smells of toffee and burnt sugar. Tastes of caramel, toffee, some dried fruits and a nice balance of hoppiness in the end. This is Good, but when it emerges from the barrels it becomes Great. The Great has much more sweetness and less hoppiness and tons of bourbon flavor.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at OíBrienís: Deep amber color with a fine, creamy off-white head. Aroma is rich, sweet and fruity. Flavor starts over-ripe tropical fruit and caramel followed by orangy/citrus flavors and a lingering, dry orange rind bitter finish. Full body is smooth and creamy with moderate carbonation. Alcohol well hidden, but gives a quick buzz.
