3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: DEC 5, 2004 Enjoyed at Pizza Portís Strong Ale festival. Too dark to get a good look at the color. Everything looked dark amber. Overall this beer had some pretty interesting characteristics. Guess what, the alcohol was definitely up front in the flavor. Slightly acidic and sharp on the tongue with a nice amount of hops. I wouldnít have guessed it was 17%, but then again I would not expect a beer to be above 10% normally. This beer is better than "good," itís very good. It needs a little more complexity for great though. I hope I have a chance to try this again sometime. Somewhat of a novelty.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
10th Annual SD Strong Ale Fest: Poured a hazy deep amber color with a small off-white head. Very sweet and fruity aroma. Candy aroma with notes of sugar, grapes and apples. The malty sweet flavor had a good amount of vinous character. Mildly tart. Semi-dry finish and a silky mouthfeel. The alcohol was very well hidden for the ABV.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On draught at Alpine. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with an eggshell head. Aroma is resiny hops, caramel malts, and dark fruit. Sweet with hoppy bitterness. Full bodied and sticky. Very good American barleywine that isnít over-the-top bitter.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Raw, unaged 14% barley wine at the brewery. Hazy bronze color with a surprisingly long lasting tan head. Very light aroma of sweet malt and a hint of booze. Wow thatís a huge flavor. Sweet syrupy but not offensive. Somehow this is not hot. This must be amazing as great.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: DEC 9, 2004 ***I have been informed that this brew hasnít been aged in the casks.... this is just a preview....so hopefully the beer to follow will be mind blowing.***** will probably bring this beer a little down rating-wise, but this was a little bit of a dissapointment. Sure it was 17% and you canít really tell, but as far as flavor goes, this seemed to be a little too young. LIke a fine wine, this brew, which was aged in Jack Daniels casks, needs at least another year to be as complex as is should be. Flavor was mild with a slight bitterness, but as with the olde school barleywine, will blossom.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
At PP SAF, malt and hop balance nose, very nice. Flavor is sweet, bitterness needs to balance out sweetness. Pretty good considering 17%

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at the brewery. Pours opaque orange copper with a a fizzy off white head and decent lacing. Tastes thick and very sweet, like sugary raisins, plums, dates, with an earthy and slightly boozy aftertaste. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like dates, raisins, and sugary, malty alcohol.
