Collaboration with New Belgium. A monastic inspired Belgian pale ale dryhopped & spiced with pink peppercorns. This is the collaboration beer brewed here with The geniuses from New Belgium Brewing, Peter and Jamie. The beer is named “Gouden Vallei” which is Flemish for “Golden Valley.” It started as a beer similar to “Orval” which also means “Gold Valley.” The same brewing style, yeast inoculation and Brettanomyces with dryhopping were employed. The real twist is the ample use of “Pink Peppercorns” which are not spicey hot but rather sweet and herbal, and they smell glorious.

Tap at Alpine. Pours a low haze golden. Heavy carbonation. Weak head. No retention. Nose is curacao/bitter orange, lemon sorbet. Taste is lemonade, potpourri, sorbet, spice. A bit too chemical and biting. Oil and acid finish. Strange. Probably would be better from a bottle that has had time to let the Brett take hold. I detected little to none.

Pours hazy orange color with a white. A really funky nose. Lots of chamomile, peppercorns, grass, and menthol. A nice touch of citrus peel and some sweet bready malt. The flavor is a little bit dry, there’s a mild citrus note, and lots of floral qualities. Tons of peppercorns, some chamomile, herbs, and a light leather note.

Bottle courtesy of Alex (Masterski). 16 oz. bottle served in a Portsmouth tulip. A: Pours a light amber color with a fluffy white head. It recedes to an airy collar and leaves some splotchy lace. S: This is definitely one of the most interesting beers I’ve ever smelt. Cactus fruit and sweet melon make some nice portion and there is a very herbal side to it as well. Basil and light mint, it smells slightly like a mojito. There is some oaty malt sweetness on the finish. T: Light herbal qualities up are up front with a healthy combination of basil and mint, but I don’t really pick up an of the sweet fruit flavors I did in the nose. The malty sweetness is there with some grassy hops as well and some yeasty notes on the finish. The taste is a little disjointed. M: Light to medium bodied with nice carbonation and some nice herbal qualities on the finish. O: I wish the taste was as interesting as the nose, but it seemed slightly restrained and a little more malty. It was kind of weird, but I enjoyed that quality about it. pour is a hazy light amber with a fairly dense off white head and thick lace. Nose is hop forward, fleshy orange, with a pale malt underneath and a sticky caramel up front. Taste is even more orange forward, so citrusy and hoppy with a faint pale malt and biscuity bite balancing. Body is light and crisp, highly carbonated with a subtle bitterness lingering.

Bottle courtesy of my man Tooch. What a tasty refreshing brew. LOVE hoppy belgian ales. Crisp and easy drinking. I could absolutely crush these all day. Citrus and pink peppercorns blend wonderfully. Alpine is one of the best.

500 ml bottle shared by seymour- thanks again, Seymour! Pours a cloudy gold with a small white head. The aroma gives off a lot of peppercorns, with citrus, tropical fruits, herbal hops, floral notes, and the slightest bit of bright funk. Flavor is loaded with peppercorns, with sweet malts, herbal hops, tropical fruits, and a tiny bit of fruity funk. Minimal brett character, and I probably wouldn’t have thought of it without reading the label. Light-medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and a peppery, fruity mouthfeel. Great beer. So nice.

Another Summer Secret Santa score--thanks StefanSD--this is exactly my kinda beer! Shared at Royale from the bottle into snifters. It poured a cloudy golden orange color with big off-white head, lasting with nice Belgian lace. Complex earthy aroma, grainy, composty, flowery, mild spices from hops and yeast, apparently young Brett as well. Perfectly balanced bittersweet flavor: mellow grainbill, only the slightest residual malt sweetness, and a little distinctively American grapefruit hops tang which hadn’t shown up in the aroma. No hint of alcohol whatsoever. Light-medium body, strong carbonation, lingering multi-dimensional aftertaste which eventually finished with a dry snap. Excellent!

Last pour from the key at churchills with Linh. Pours an amber body with thick white lacing. Aroma is front hop and belgian candy. Mouthfeel is super creamy with notes of Belgian yeast and extremely muted hop. Even though this is one of my less favorable styles, the tameness Of the flavor is backed up by the Extremely rich and creamy palate.

Bottle split with mcberko. Pours translucent orange/gold with a dissipating white head. Aroma of piney hops, pepper, herbal notes, yeast. Flavour mainly of pepper, yeast, some quite rich sweetness - but having trouble figuring it out. Medium body, leaves a nice fresh pepper feel on the upper mouth. Nice.
