3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is a pretty intense barley wine. Not your average fare. Thicker, maltier and much more noticable alcohol. A nice apertif. Iíd be afraid to get wrecked off this stuff as barley wines tend to get me violently hammered. That said, see you at Toronado next year!

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Great looking rich ruby mahogany pour with small quickly dissipating head. The nose is split evenly between rich earthiness (almost moldiness) and an intense alcohol kick. The flavor is very sweet, with notes of dried fruit, mold, oak, smoke and a very strong alcohol burn in the back end. Very weird brew!

3.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Odd barley wine. Looks fine, a rudy brown, clear body with the slenderest of bubbly heads. The aroma starts with the requisites, a light Bourbon scent, toffee, some fruits, alcohol... and then a strange, earthy, fungoid smell creeps in. Getting past that I find myself drinkling a fairly smooth, hot, malty barley wine, sticky sweet, with raw wood, alcohol, old fruit, and a hint of smoke. The finish is hot, sticky, and earthy. And when I set the glass down for a minute, my mouth feels unclean. The more I thought about it, the lower my rating got. Some day Iíll have to try this again to see what I missed.

Bottle courtesy of Naven. Very similar to Drakeís Brandy Barrel BW. This beer is VERY hot w/ alcohol. As hot as any Iíve had. Whiskey and oak in the back of the throat. Maple syrup flavor. Rather dry finish. I am a sucker for a whiskey barrel-aged beer. This one definitely fits the bill. Disagree w/ other raters that say itís not overpowering. It is definitely overpowering, but I like íem that way.

3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
375ml bottle. Purchased at South Bay Drugs and Liquor in Imperial Beach, CA. Pours a deep cloudy mahgony. The head was intially a thing pale foam, and has since disappted to a partially there bubbly layer. Ligh aroma lacking much of any distinction. The taste is quite strong and overpowering with a large alcholic flavor in the forefront and a bitter aftertaste. It is a lumbering giant of a barleywine and Iím sad to say that this is not as good as I expected, it might need more time to mellow in the bottle. It is certainly not as sweet as most barley wines. Worth a try.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle: Mahogany ruby color, nice off-white head and light spotty lacing. Moderate carbonation and no sediment on the bottom. Impressive that a beer this strong, plus the barrel aging has maintained the proper carbonation and head retention without any additional yeast. The nose is light and fruity with plum, cherry, fig, carob, light bourbon and some nutty sherry notes. The flavor is a mix of sherry, balsamic vinegar, maple syrup and molasses. Moderate alcohol in the taste but it doesnít burn too bad. Sweet balances the tart oakiness. The sherry taste compliments the syrupy body. Not overpowering in anyway. Smooth, balanced, all together itís delicious.

Wow, just like Tony said, this is great! Beautiful dark fruit flavors and a lot of nuttiness, like an Amontillado sherry. Amazing aroma, various types of oakiness, vanilla and caramel, figs and dates. Warm and sweet like maple syrup.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured a hazy amber color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of vanilla, strong oak, sticky malts, and bourbon. Taste was dry oak, light vanilla and dried fruits, sweet caramel malt, light citrus, and bourbon alcohol in the finish.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
375mL bottle: This barley wine appears a dense brown and mahogany color. Head is a tiny layer of fat foam bubbles that break up quickly. Aroma is robust and has strong reminders of a lumber yard, and oddly enough a trace of soy sauce. The flavor is strong and tart with a slight sourness. Taste of old caramel malt and faded hops behind a thick maple syrup and again more soy sauce.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft, 2005 PP Strong Ale Fest.Copper brown and clear with no head. Huge fruity bready aroma, fig pudding, touch of vanilla, and a touch of raisin, and a lot of alcohol. Big malty fruity flavors, plums and prunes and a touch of raisins, a little woody and a touch of vanilla. Big peppery alcohol finish. Very warming. Syrupy and cloying. I really liked this, but I couldnít drink a lot of it.
