stefanje (552), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Nov 13, 2007 Updated: Nov 14, 2007 650 ml bottle from South Bay Drugs. This is the fall 2007 version. Pours a slightly murky red-brown with a small off-white head that quickly fades to nothing. The Aroma is very intriguing, I get a big whiff of Cognac (somewhat like Remy-Martin), there is also some sour apple and a little allspice. The taste is very layered and complex; the beer starts out sour with Cognac, and then gives way to a well balanced yeasty-malty-bready sensation. The finish is long with lingering spices of pumpkin and nutmeg. The mouthfeel is full and creamy, but given the bold flavors of this beer its hard to take notice of the palate. Overall: I really like sour, so I really like this beer, my congrats to the guys at Alpine. This is a new favorite. Recommended. -- Re-rate note(score not affected) After finishing my glass of Ichabod I noticed that there is a fair amount of particle residue in the glass (Lees/Trub?), not sure what this signifies, I just thought that I’d mention it.
tytoanderso (1183), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA Aug 24, 2008 22oz bottle. Pours a thick, hazed, dark copper with a thin off white film on top. Plenty tart and sour on the nose with little of the spices and pumpkin. Cherry skin, tart grape skin and oak. Wild yeast funk, leaf pile, dry earth. Nice. This one took a while to open up. Much better after a half our or so out of the fridge. The pumpkin, nutmeg and cinnamon are much more prevalent on the tongue than the nose. Some bretty funk. Loads of barrel tannin. Very earthy. Restrained acidity at first but becoming more and more tart the longer the beer sits. More earthy pumpkin that the spices. Rich and creamy mouthfeel with lively and mouth filling carbonation. Finishes dry, tart, moderately acidic. A very cool and unique experiment. Thanks a ton for this rare treat Markus! hopscotch (4482), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Jul 27, 2008 Bottle... Hazy orange ale with a mid-sized, creamy, off-white head. Terrific retention. Acidic, spicy nose with notes of wood, underripe red apple, autumn spice and pumpkin. Medium-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Tart, tangy flavor provides lots of bretty acidity and moderate bitterness with a restrained undertone of autumn spice. Finishes crisp and moderately pungent. Thanks go out to WeeHeavySD for shipping the bottle all the way from SoCal! Ughsmash (2999), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jul 27, 2008 Bomber. Poured slightly hazy medium orange with some rising carbonation and a short, fizzier cap of beige head. The aroma picked up deep, sour red grape and cherry skins, nutmeg, and lesser pumpkin meat upfront with cinnamon and other spices rising as it warmed up.. I dug the sour fruity notes and the use of the wine barrel. The flavor had a definite Belgian-inspired brown ale base with some caramel and darker fruits complemented by a bit of funky yeast.. the pumpkin and related spices didn’t do much until the back-end, joining a dry red wine and oak presence.. finished sour, dry, and strangely refreshing. Medium-bodied with a whole bunch of carbonation on the palate.. not the best feel on the palate, but I did like the barrel usage.. odd one, but tasty. bgburdman9 (722), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jun 28, 2008 An old rating i finally got to entering. Aroma was of light pumpkin and spice and a little sourness. Flavor was light on the palate and mild overall. fishingnet (805), Brandon, Florida, USA May 29, 2008 Bottle courtesy tpd975.
