COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
6.6% Belgian Brown Ale aged 3 months in Calloway Vineyard’s red wine oak barrels with cinnamon, nutmeg (fresh, hand-ground) and Pumpkin. Some special wild yeast gives it a cherry pie tart flavor and the spices are gracefully subtle. The red wine helps with some tang, too.

A: The pour is a slightly hazed red amber color with a small off-white head. S: Still a fair amount of spice notes for a beer that’s 3 years old. Nutmeg and allspice really come through with some lactic tartness but it’s not really all that powerful. Some notes of dark fruit (mainly cherries) are present as well. T: A more pronounced sourness to the flavor and this beer is plenty dry. Again, lots of nutmeg, allspice, and perhaps even some cinnamon. A mild sweetness, but mostly dry, tart cherries. M: The body is medium with a moderate level of carbonation and a nice dry finish. D: I’m glad to have finally tried this beer. Definitely an interesting one, but I really liked it. Not something you see everyday, if nothing else.

[Bottle, thanks Guerde!] Pours hazy orange with a small off-white head. Aroma is very nice. Pumpkin mixes well with the sour component. Fresh cut wood, rice pudding, leather, blackberry, paint, and slight alcohol. Taste is quite sour, lots of tannins, especially in the finish. Malt, very mild bitterness, and apple. Progression is sour, then pumpkin/tannins, followed by malt and spice. Medium thin mouthfeel, slightly dry finish that is long. Very unique and enjoyable beer that has a lot going on. Thanks again, Andy!

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Muddy amber color; small head. The aroma is light, mixing some fruits, vegetables; but also a very light and nice sourness, Bretts. Dry mouthfeel, citrus fruits sourness, light yeasty caramel flavor the final is medium sour. It can be a fake lambic, but quite confused and not convincing.

(bottle from Beerbill) Pours out a dark amber with a thick off-white head that lasts and leaves nice lacing on the glass. There are also abundant floating chunks of something that are present when held up to the light. The aroma is downright perfect and extraordinarily complex. The aromas start out with everything that should be there, such as the pumpkin, nutmeg and cinnamon, and a lot of barrel as well. As this warms however, the smell begins to move all over the place, with stranger scents of cracked pepper, sweet rice pudding, leather, wood finish, fresh paint, earth, and even a bit of orange zest. The flavor was not as complex as the aroma, but the tastes were great anyway, with just a hint of sweetness to begin with, that is followed by a really dry, salty, vinous, and tannic finish that lasts a long time. There’s a bit of pumpkin here also, but it’s subdued by the more prominent barrel character, and the spices are perceived upon exhaling. The sourness is relatively low on the spectrum for sour ales, but that really works well for this beer. Mouthfeel is medium and the carbonation is very lively. An amazing beer. Thanks Bill!

Bottle thanks to Naven. Pours a murky brown/amber with a thick light tan head. Aroma of allspice, pumpkin pie, pumpkin crust, cinnamon, nutmeg, sweet molasses, and sour wood. Flavor is sweet initially, sort of oaky/woodsy and sour spices. This was pretty interesting with the sour ale/ pumpkin spices. A little wearing/sweet by the end but decent. 7/4/7/4/14 (3.6/5)

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma is sweet and acidic with notes of brettanomyces, lacto, wood, and citrus fruits as well as lighter notes of hops. The flavor is sweet combined with an acidity and with notes of malt and lemon as well as lighter notes of wood, leading to a tart fruity finish. The acidity burns lightly on the palate.
