3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BrotherGrendel (787) - San Diego, California, USA - FEB 11, 2011
Draft at Obriens. Pitch black hue with thin ring of tan head. Nose is grassy and resin with hints of citrus. Flavor is hoppy up front... Dank pine resin mostly... with a strong foundation of bready malts, faint citrus and chalk in the background, finishes slightly sweet. Medium-full body, modest carbonation, thick texture. Very balanced and flavorful dark IPA, great example of the style.

Draft at Stone Bistro. Clear black pour, off-white head. Grapefruit, resinous hops, citrus, sharp bitterness, and lightly roasted malt. Very hoppy black IPA, and lacks some of the chocolate notes seen in others of this style. Great if your in the mood for a hoppy alpine beer.

From the tap poured a dark brown color with a fair amount of head. Nice toasted malty hoppy flavor with a lasting finish.

Taster at the brewery. Black pour with a small off-white head. aroma is strong with weeds and essence of bong water. The flavor is overtly biter hops forward with pine.citrus and walnuts. Palate is full and malty. Finishes long dry and biter. Overall: wow, just wow.

On tap at Hamilton’s tavern in San Diego. My notes are weak on this because I was rather out of my tree. I put good, dark, 3.7 or 3.8. I’ll go back and try to revisit this brew.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 nickd717 (3394) - San Francisco, California, USA - DEC 6, 2010
UPDATED: DEC 8, 2010 Growler thanks to largadeer. Very dark brown in color with a one finger beige head and good lacing. The aroma is excellent, extremely piney with coffee and roast playing a big role. The flavor starts with piney hops, goes to coffee, charcoal, and dark chocolate, then back to hops in a big way. Extremely resinous on the palate with medium-plus body and average carbonation. Just a tad heavier than I’d like on the mouthfeel. Hoppy as hell. Really solid beer from the ’pine...as usual

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 tokyogoat (1503) - San Diego, California, USA - DEC 3, 2010
Pours a dark espresso brown / black color. Nose is sharp with piney west coast hops. Taste is good, hop flavor is there, I really like how mellow the roasted characters are, but the excess body killed it for me. It had a really heavy mouthfeel like there was a large % of carafoam used, which made it fairly difficult to drink a lot of. I have a feeling future batches are going to keep getting better as this beer gets dialed in. Aside from the body of it, this is spot on what i like in a black IPA.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 nightrider (751) - encinitas, California, USA - NOV 27, 2010
Pour was from a growler picked up at the brewery on Black Friday. Fittingly the color of the brew is pretty jet black indeed with a nice tan mocha head. Aromas were supremely fresh earthy citrus. Medium bodied and smooth with appropriate carbonation. Flavors were many with a blast of dank hop bitterness and bite. Quickly next comes roasted smoky malt with hints of anise, molasses, and chocolate. The flavors linger well with balanced dryness. Love this beer and my new favorite for the style. Cheers to Alpine !
