Pours a dark espresso brown / black color. Nose is sharp with piney west coast hops. Taste is good, hop flavor is there, I really like how mellow the roasted characters are, but the excess body killed it for me. It had a really heavy mouthfeel like there was a large % of carafoam used, which made it fairly difficult to drink a lot of. I have a feeling future batches are going to keep getting better as this beer gets dialed in. Aside from the body of it, this is spot on what i like in a black IPA.

Type: 64-oz. draft growler Glass: Manzanita pint glass From: Alpine Beer Company in Alpine, Calif. Price: $12.46 Purchased: Oct. 11, 2015 Consumed: Oct. 11, 2015 Misc.: N/A Poured a rich, dark mahogany, closer to black color with 2-to3 fingers of dark, khaki-tan, frothy head, which settles nicely on the top. Very good uneven, layered, spiderweb lacing on the sides of the glass. Very good retention. The best part of the beer. (Sight - 4.50) Surprisingly got a lot more hops than anything else on the nose. Was expecting a rich, meltier nose, but got Citra, grapefruit, earthy, Citra rind, pine, some resin, faint pineapple and mango (wishful?) and floral, backed by a touch of roastiness. (Smell - 4.00) More balanced in the nose than the smell with a good mixture of malts and hops. First taste is earthy, bitter Citra rind, followed by roasty, gritty malts. Also pine, char wood, Nugget, resin, faint roasted chocolate, tropical, cooked vegetables and much less grapefruit than the nose. (Taste - 3.75) Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Bitter, earthy, veggie finish, reminding me slightly of a New Belgium Ranger IPA. (Feel - 3.25) Disappointed in this one overall and I’m pretty much a sucker for Black Ale’s. Wish I would have just got a pint at the pub instead of a growler. (Overall - 3.50) 3.76 85 B+

Poured from a growler shared by Steve. Black pour with a small head. Nose is hops mixed with malt/chocolate. Flavor is toasted malt, chocolate, with a hoppy finish. Definitely different. Flavors don’t go together great.

>> Black pour with thicker coffee head, amazing sheets of lacing. Nose is big coffee, tamarind, dried fruit, smokey. Taste is rich, mild coffee, nicely bitter, long bitter cocoa bar power, mild savory smoke and grilled steak. Rich and encompassing hop bomb mouthfeel. Really good, not a straightforward grilled pineapple style Black IPA. A monster beer. Loved it.

Draught at Toronado, San Diego. Black beer with a small brownish head. Malty roasted aroma, caramel, licorice, floral notes, metal, grassy, hay, herbal, licorice, chocolate notes. Hoppy roasted chocolate flavor, cocoa, citrus, grass, licorice notes, hay, grapefruit, some caramel. Good beer.

On tap@ Toronado SD: Poured a dark black liquid with a tiny formation of head on top. Aroma is full of hops that suggest a ton of green hop pellet that give off a smell of citrus. With a dominant presence of grapefruit and tart tangerine. The flavor is different than I remember it from previous tastings because of the strong taste of cascade or centennial hops that give off a taste of grapefruit, lime leaf, and a funky sweet taste of onion. This is an okay black IPA but it doesn’t win me over as some of the other BIPA available.

On draught at Alpine. Pour dark brown/near black with a khaki head. Aroma is bright and juicy citrus, cocoa, and roast and some anise. Taste is sweet with some mild bitterness. Medium bodied and a bit sticky. Good for the style.

Growler shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike! The beer is dark brown and appears nearly transparent, in spite of the dark color. The head is about 1/2" thick, and leaves some decent lacing behind. The aroma is primarily of citric hops, with mild roast. The flavor follows suit, and marries the roast with hops nicely. Flavorful and well balanced. A good brew, but nowhere near the quality of their regular IPA lineup. Serving type: growler Reviewed on: 05-27-2011
