porterhouse (991), Alna, Maine, USA Mar 20, 2008 (500 ml bottle from Julio’s Liquors) Pours dark rubyish brown with about 1/2" of tan head that recedes to a thin covering. Aroma is what you might call brown sugar, chocolate and molasses (those are best descriptors I could come up with because aroma notes aren’t exactly like any of those). Mouthfeel is medium-full, lightly prickly, fairly smooth. Tastes mostly dark and chocolatey with maybe some traces of port and molasses. Flavor is quite muted for style and with very little complexity but OK tasting. Not as chocolatey as TH Liberator but slightly similar. Has a bit of a warming alcohol effect that snuck up on me. Won’t make the doppel hall of fame but not too bad anyway.
illidurit (489), Santa Cruz, California, USA Nov 29, 2008 Cool swingtop 500 mL bottle poured into a Celebrator glass. Medium brown color with orangey highlights. Beige head settles to a thin film in about a minute, leaving little lacing. Brown malt aroma with a big dose of metallic character. Smells like it was aged in a barrel made of coins. Some perfume and nuts as well. Thankfully the flavor has none of the metal, but it doesn’t have a lot of anything really. Bready brown malt with a little cocoa sweetness and a hint of roast. Not bad, just not full enough. Body is just under medium in heft, carbonation is good. badgerben (3234), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Nov 28, 2008 Dark brown color with a thick head. Dark fruit aroma, with caramel malt and prunes. Lots of sweet malt flavor, toffee and caramel. Light graininess towards the end. Oddly enough, almost watery. Still solid. beerguy101 (3547), Newark, California, USA Nov 27, 2008 Sampled on 11/27/2008. This doppel bock pours a dark brown color form a 50cl swing top bottle. Small to medium sized beige foamy head. The aroma is toasted malt, caramel and cookie. A medium bodied doppelbock. The malts are caramel, fruity and semi sweet. The hops are floral and earthy. Nice balance. Good carbonation. This one starts out fairly sweet and finishes slightly crisp and dry. Nice doppelbock. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. sebletitje (579), Tampa, Florida, USA Oct 31, 2008 Pours dark brown with off white head.
Aroma is malty, light roasted and hoppy.
Taste, malty, some light caramel notes and sugar with hops in the background.
There is light yeasty/hoppy taste that leaves an almost spicy feel. Light chocolate, leaves a thick mouthfeel. Sparky27 (717), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Sep 23, 2008 Swing top bottle courtesy of mcbackus. Pours a clear deep reddish brown with a 2 finger creamy beige head. Nose is super sweet. Ripe dark fruits, brown sugar and molasses. Taste is prunes, raisins, burnt caramel and a light hop finish followed by more sugar. Medium mouth feel. Not bad, just a tad on the sweet side for me. Thanks Matt!
