Doggythedog (1076), Split, Croatia Mar 16, 2005 Natural and aromatic..... well, from my last experience with Altenmünster lagers, I expected it to be fake and smelly. But, it wasn’t. Still wasn’t too good. Not for the price. Apparently, this was the most expensive beer among the five beers a friend brought from Germany. More expensive than, say, Paulaner Dunkelweizen. Not worth it. It might be because of the bottles, but all Altenmünster beers seem to be far overpriced. Anyway, to the beer. Pale golden, fluffy white head. Aromatic ? Not really. The nose was far from intensive, but kind of pleasant, malt and lemon. Taste ? Again, lemon, and malt, with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Not much body. After I left it to get a bit warmer, something happened. It started smelling malty, but in a disgusting way. I guess those are the "strange emanations" an earlier rater mentioned. The same thing reflected in the taste. So, pleasant while fresh and cold, but not really stable. I drank better.
oh6gdx (6460), Vaasa, Finland Oct 23, 2008 Bottled@Kahdet Kasvot, Tampere. Golden colour, big white head. Aroma is hops, mild bready maltyness as well as some paper. Flavour is much the same. Very earthy. Yet refreshing. TBone (5172), Pori, Finland Oct 20, 2008 (Bottled, flip top, BB 02/2009). Pub Kahdet Kasvot, Tampere.
Golden color, small white head. Grassy, a bit buttery hoppy, papery aroma. Grainy, grassy hoppy, supermarket-type beer. Kind of refreshing. tomer (199), Israel Sep 26, 2008 0.5L bottle, medium stable creamy head, golden colour, strong carbonation. Malt and vanila aroma, sweet malty taste with strong sourness, also notes of vanila and tobbaco. medium bodied with an exremely long sweet and sour aftertaste. Not bad but not exactly to my taste. sirPino (625), Zawiercie / Żywiec, Poland Sep 3, 2008 No 527
Bottle brown, 500 ml, 11 P
Appearance: Pours bright and shiny goldenbody with high saturation and white, frothy, rocky, quite pillowy head, slowly decreasing from big to the average, leaving nice lacing.
Aroma: Decent, classic aroma of Premium Lager but nothing extraordinary here as the sophisticated bottle would suggest. In Poland this kind of beer is packed just into plain bottles. Wet, hoppy nose, moderately alcoholic, clean barley malt at the back, gentle yeastyness mixing with maltyness, milky and whipped cream, gentle saltyness, no additional herbal accents.
Flavour: Chalky, metallic and kind of rusty front, pure grains of barley, completely reduced sweetness, kind of truffle like and citrusy hoppyness with a nice bitterness on palate, saltyness, notes of citruses, especially grapefruit and lemon, finish duration is medium.
Palate: Body is light, texture is quite dry, carbonation on palate is moderate to high, finish feel is highly astringent, accidic, salty and metallic.
Archibaldo de la Cruz (174), Finland Aug 31, 2008 Bottle. Malty aroma with notes of hops. Flavour is malty, some sweetness and spicy hoppiness. Medium bodied and quite balanced. Nothing special but very drinkable beer.
