UPDATED: JAN 31, 2006 Swingtop pint bottle from <a href=http://ratebeer.com/Place/illinois/oak-forest Liquors, Oak Forest. Well, it’s been a rough evening: a toilet overflowed upstairs, filling the globe of a light fixture downstairs. Plumber snakes it out, I bleach two rooms and do lots of laundry. Now I can just settle down with a real "old style" beer poured in a straight .2 l Stiegel glass. My first steinbier. Didn’t think it’d be smoky, but what should I have expected with this method. Pours nice brown with gold in narrow part oif the glass. Tiny floaties visible in the glass. Smell is smoke, but not bacony like Aecht Schlenkerla. A nice caramel nose too, under a thin clingy head. Smokiness returns in the tasting; like a smoked Edam cheese. Malts are like caramel wrapped around campfire marshmallows. Just enough bitterness to keep the sweetness in check. Lots more particles toward the bottom of the glass give it something of a campfire flavor. Too bad this isn’t date-stamped; I wonder how old this one is and how it changes over time.

16oz swingtop bottle 4/00-Pours a dark brown with a decent off white head. Aroma of smoke, malt, and bacon. Taste of the same with more smoke coming out. This medium bodied brew was not bad but lacking with the smoke.

Rating from memory, as this used to be a favorite: amber color leaning towards brown, tan head. Appealing aroma of smoke, spices and sweet malt. Smoky, malty flavor with light, but well-balanced bitterness. A true pity that it’s now unavailable.

1 pint swingtop purchased at New Beer in NYC - considering that at least 60% of the ratings for this beer in the last year were entered by NY/NJ folks, I’ll assume they all got this beer there, too, so who knows how long it’s been sitting on their shelves (damn you, New Beer!) - the top made a huge pop and beer gushed out of the top of the bottle - really cloudy amber beer, with a frothy, well-sustained head - a lot of oxidation and mustiness in the aroma, woodsy campfire smells, and an underlying sweetness that makes the overall aroma remind me a bit of toasting marshmallows on a damp spring night - the flavor shows more signs of age than the aroma does - quite a bit of cobweb and earthiness - a bit of oxidation and acidic character - a little bit of over-ripe fruit sweetness, combining with the acidity and smoke to make it taste like baked apples wrapped in bacon (yea, weird) - too old, or just poorly kept (New Beer!), but I don’t imagine this was that good fresh either.

.5 liter bottle. Pours a murky woody smokey brown with a thin diminishing head- some lace to begin with but fades as well. Aroma is smoked meats, campfire, some beechwood and a harsher smoked alder- like a mild Alaskan smell. Flavor has some smokiness but not as intense, and is subdued by some stale malts, crackers, and paper- cobwebby and musty. Gritty and cereal finish- mouthfeel is a bit weak. Probably would be nice when fresh.

Shared with puzzl (thanks Andy!). Poured light brown with a bit of white head. Smelled like a barbecue pretty much. Plenty of bacon in there, no question about it. Taste is smoky, not much else. Palate was very thin, almost watery. Like puzzl said, don’t drink this warm.

Hammy, light smoke aroma. Florals and, err, hotdog. Thin and lacking flavor is mostly light smoke, certainly not bad but not full and rich like a Schlenkerla. Better cold.

500 ml flip-top bottle that practically exploded when I flipped the top. Lots of gushing all over me, my sofa, and my floor. Whatever... I’m selling the sofa anyway. Dark brown appearance with a lot of dark brown particles suspended throughout. Creamy tan head. The aroma is quite smokey with lots of beechwood character, heavy toffee and dark caramel. Some caramelized wortiness. Flavour is similar to the aroma with lots of sweet smoke, sweet caramel and toffee. The palate is a bit thinner than all of the rich smell/flavour would suggest. Smoke recedes behind a soft herbal/caramel finish. The flavour seems to underdeliver on what the aroma promises, but I wouldn’t say no to another one.

Gawd...it’s been a long time since I tasted this, but I well remember it, rich and caramelly...delicious stuff. An Olaf Schellenberg beer, I also tried a "Steinweizen" by the same brewer which was "superb" according to my notes.
