I’m not a doppelbock fan, they’re too sweet. But, this one is a pretty solid db. It smells great and has a pleasant raisiny malt taste with little bitterness.

Fantastic aroma. It is full of dark fruit, caramel, and brown sugar. Flavor has some harshness. Fruits such as raisins and plum are present as well as sugar and alcohol. It is completely devoid of carbonation and feels oily and sugary in the mouth. The aroma was super but flavor could be more exciting. A nice beer, though.

Swing-top Bottle: Pours deep amber/brown with an initially thick tan head that fades. Sweet malt aroma with mainly indications of brown sugar and some sweet lager fruitiness. A bit metallic as well. The mouth feel is slick and the flavor is sweet. Has some raisiny notes, and the bitterness, however, is very metallic and doesn’t balance the initial sweetness harmoniously. Eh...
3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 thegreenrooster (2525) - St.louis, Missouri, USA - JAN 25, 2008
Pour is a almost black with a nice sized tan head. Aroma is some caramel malts but very faint and hidden. Flavor is some molasses and dark fruit with a touch of wood smoke. Finish is a bit watery and there is a bit of alcohol burn. Everything is low key in this beer and that is just about enough to put it only in the good category.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 CaptainCougar (6833) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - JAN 20, 2008
Pours a transparent amber mahogany with a thin ring of light tan head. Aroma of sweet, lightly toasted bready dark caramel German malts and a touch of noble hops. Body starts with good fullness some sweet caramel malt and a larger amount of bitterness than I’m used to in the style toward a drier bittersweet, slightly earthy and peaty finish. An ok doppelbock, but I’d like a little more prolonged sweetness.

The aroma is dark malt with toffee and cream. The appearance is dark brown with a nice head. The flavor is like the aroma with a slight astringent taste. The palate is smooth. Overall it’s good.

Flip top bottle. Pours dark brown with ruby and thick off-white head that slowly dissipates. Aroma is roasty with some sweet malts. Flavor is yeasty, roasty, and slighly fruity. Mouthfeel is a little oily, but that’s not really a bad thing. Far from the best doppelbock I’ve ever had, but still a good beer.

From a 500 ml bottle. The store also had a super cool 2L bottle that I seriously considered buying just to get the bottle. stay on topic! Dark brown, almost coffee colored body. Light khaki head. The aroma is surprising bananas with some amaretto. The body is nice and smooth, vanilla and amaretto are the dominant tastes here. Notes of caramel and some light cocoa also sneak in behind that in the finish. A solid doppelbock.
