Pours with a mildly effervescent body of swirling sediment (cola in coloring), under a long-standing, creamy, tan head. Lightly staled wheatgrass gently taints an otherwise pleasant aroma of toasty malt, crispy caramel and peanut brittle with subtle hits of alcohol and basement mustiness. Dang... that alcohol is a tad too forward in the flavor as I take several sips, one after another (after another) trying to concentrate on the gorgeous depth and richness of the underlying caramel-sweetened, roasted maltiness. A mildly disappointing aftertaste suggests this could be bumped up to be a little more bold, but it’s still a solid, delicious beer. ~~~~~~~~~ Absolutely no idea on where this came from nor how long it’s been in my cellar. Which is odd since my "cellar" has basically dwindled down to a handful of Dark Lords, Stone Vertical Epics and a smattering of Anchor Christmas beers from 1999-2007.

2 liter flip-top growler from my sister-in-law. Pours a clear, deep amber-brown colored body with a finger-width, creamy, beige head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is clean and malty sweet with some caramel and slightly bready toffees, dark fruits, a light earth, and a hint of toast. Flavor is similar. Sweetly malted with some caramel and toffees with a touch of bready toast. Some dark fruits and a balancing earthy hop throughout with some noticeable alcohol, but not enough to distract. Finishes clean and malty smooth with some nice dark fruits and a light bitterness. Medium length aftertaste following a medium, smooth body and a soft, medium-light carbonation. Overall, a clean and easy drinking doppelbock. Nothing crazy, but it hides the alcohol pretty well and stays balanced. Not bad.

Poured from the 2l growler. This was a pleasant doppelbock. Aroma was caramel, malty, toffee. Palate is medium full body, starts oily and think but finished watery and thin with a long carmel malt on the tongue. Overall pretty good.

Pours a dark brown with nice off white head. Aroma of toffee mats and bread. Nive malty flavor, very sweet flavor, but palate was a bit thin for a doppel bock, still good though

Bottle. Pours a medium brown with an off-white head that diminishes quickly. Smells sweet and somewhat nutty with a hint of funky herb. Flavor is of wheat and very sweet. Maybe some floral/herbal hop notes but not much. Almost cola-like, like they added corn syrup. Very thin, sweet and not complex.

Very Malty and sweet, but also clean on the finish. Easy to drink due to the watery finish, but that could get you in trouble.

2 liter growler flip top. It pours beautifully into my 1 liter dimpled mug. It is a deep, dark brown, looks black int eh big vessel, and a unique brownish tan head. The smell is super malty. A nice dark doppelbock. It is sweet with some cocoa and caramel. There is an alcoholic twang and also some subtle dark fruits. It is big and bold, i like it. The initial gulp is quite flavorful, one of the sweeter, more flavorful doppelbocks. It is thick with molasses, cocoa, dark bread, some licorice, and dark fruit. It is just a looong quaff of malt. IT is a flavor deeper than you will usually come across. The mouthfeel is full and thick, but perhaps lacks a bit of carbonation. It is a mouth full of flavor. I have to lower drinkability a little bit because the sweetness is tiring after a while. Serving type: growler Reviewed on: 01-23-2011 23:40:54

From Gene’s in Lincoln Square. Not an outstandingly complex Doppelbock more a easy drinking doppelbock. Some of the that malty flavor that other doppelbocks have that is reminiscent of soy sauce(but in a good way) but only a little. A bit thin. I liked it but it isn’t going to win best in category.
