Bottle . Pours dark brown, foam rises out of the bottle . In the pour its rather small though, and it dissapears completely within a minute . Smell is Sweet, copper . Taste is bit sweet, some bitterness, some very hidden coffee character from the roasted malts. Very overcarbonated . Alcohol is very hidden . Taste is balanced, complex a bit as well , but the intensity is not at all what it should be for 11 ABV . Just as well as the mouthfeel . I would have guessed this beer was about 6 ABV ... Nevertheless, an enjoyable beer.

Leighton (14431) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 5, 2014
Bottle shared at Gainsbar with Bruce and Colin - Kortrijk, Belgium. Pours clear, red-brown with a tight, tan cream head. Lots of ripe, dark fruits on the nose, some grapes, raisins, dates. Hugely sweet flavor, very boozy, with burnt toast, dark fruits. Full bodied with average, high carbonation. Sweet and hot on the finish with burnt earth bitterness, more raisins and other dried fruits. Quite heavy. Not very cohesive or drinkable.

Een stout die heel zoet ruikt en de smaak heeft dat vergelijkbaar is met een saisonbier.

Alone at home. Dark brown colored beer with large diminishing brown head and only few carbonation visible. Rather malty roasted and smoked aroma. Full sparkling palate. Finish is very smokey, alcoholic, fruity hints ending bitter dry.

I have met the brewer in person on several occasions and he is a nice guy, but in Alternatief’s early years they somehow failed to surprise me with a really ’good’ beer. This one, created in 2009, comes closer but still misses the point a bit. Yellowish, creamy head, colour a very dark ruby brown, almost black, clear. Strongly coffee-like toasted bitter aroma, bitter chocolate, raisins, caramel, black pepper, leafy hops, dates; taste a thick and deep chocolate maltiness and dark fruitiness, mouth-filling, but lacking the character, ’severity’ and oiliness of a true imperial stout - more of a typically Belgian ’massive ale’ (the style that is apparently called ’abt’ here) unrealisticly dreaming of becoming an imperial stout one day.

Mørk dunkel og uklar. Tyndt halvflygtigt let brunt skum. Meget svag næse med lidt krydderi og jern. Karakteristisk smag med jord, anis og en anelse kaffe. Tilpas balance mellem bitterhed og sødme. Ganske ok ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330ml bottle. Chestnut colour with small to average, creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, ochre head. Chocolately malty aroma, hints of cocoa powder, a yeasty touch, fruity hints of plum and the like, some treacle, a touch of Marmite. Taste is earthy, herbal, slightly fruity, hints of wood, mushroom, moss, a touch of cocoa, some Marmite; some warming alcohol in the finish. In this case disadvantageous Belgian, heavily alcoholic.
