(11.2oz bottle thanks to bu11zeye) opaque ruddy orange-brown with great creamy tan head. Nose of apple, caramel. Taste of cola, lightly sour, nuts, and champagne-like carbonation.

330 ml. bottle sampled. BBF BBF 08/2016. GUSHER – HUGE GUSHER. Now my floor & table are all sticky and dirty! Yeah Alvinne…… enough has been said. Dark to murky brownish, head collapses almost instantly but not before it spills over everywhere,…. Nose is sour red fruits, vinous, sour oak, faint vinegar, Oud Bruin-like, sour red fruits & soda. Taste is rotting red fruits & leathery rotting tobacco, malts, not quite sour but dirty & a faintly almost sour, rotting red fruits, watery, caramel, milk chocolate, oak, old wet leaves, compost, rotting wet oak,… Watery, hugely messy body. Almost approximating a failed Oud Bruin, a real mess but acceptable if you enjoy the Oud Bruin style. Obv. this is everything but what it was supposed to be.

Bottle at home. APPEARANCE: brown beer, nice stable beige head, but extreme GUSHER... Alvinne made again, happy to hear though they found the problem behind this recurring event, and fixed it. NOSE: caramel, sweet, malts, molasses? TASTE: caramel, sweet, malts. Oké beer

Bottle at home Pours dark brown , big white head . Smell is very weird ... Green, but not at all in a hoppy manner, more like... earthy , leaves ,caramel, herbs ... Very complex and just weird . Taste is bit bitter, sweet, chocolate, bit metallic, earthy , caramel , malts, the herbal character is there, but way less than in the scent . Very , very complex beer, with the ideal carbonation . aftertaste is herbal earthy , soft and a tad sweet . No gusher, yet made by alvinne ( appatently different yeast according to the deScription . it IS possible !

Random pickup from a store in Milan, had no idea what it was. Medium brown, little head. Aroma is quite boozy, with chocolate, molasses, boozy dark fruit rum cake. Taste is pretty nice, very enjoyable sweetness with a slick finish. I thought it was great.

UPDATED: OCT 3, 2015 Abbey-style quadrupel since 2008, re-rating from a bottle now (obtained from Wijnegemse Drankenhal). Creamy and moussy, yellowish pale beige head, hazy reddish bronze burgundy colour. Aroma of candied dates, dry autumn leaves, melting candi sugar, hazelnut paste, pear brandy, wet straw, dried reeds, caramel, very old cocoa powder, nutmeg, some faint clove- and at times even varnish-like phenols. Sweetish taste, not cloying, medlar, overripe pear and a sourish tinge of gooseberries; soft carbo, supple and smooth mouthfeel; caramelly, very (dark) bready maltiness with a sourish edge - almost ’versnijbier’-like - and even turning into diluted coffee grounds in a further stage, increasingly drying towards the end due to - obviously unintended - bacterial lactic sourishness as well as - probably more intended - roasted bitterness nevertheless staying subtle, as in a typical Belgian Christmas beer. On top of this basis, there is a clearly uncontrolled play of spicy yeastiness, phenolic and ending a bit wry along with deep, earthy and lightly spicy hops as well as a dash of warming, but unrefined, rhum-like alcohol. The intentions of Alternatief and Piet Salomez are pure, but why come up with this mediocrity instead of honouring a style which has spawned a few of the finest beers in the world? This beer is drinkable, but there is no balance. It also pains me a bit that apparently this has not improved one bit compared with the original 2008 version. Downer.
