Draught at the brewpub. This poured a lovely, superb misty amber-red body, with an off white-tan head. The nose is immediately a small letdown though. Soft & malty, with very light notes of hard candy. The taste is unfortunately as I expected it after that... empty. Somewhat sweet, soft. with very light soapy/herbal notes. Ordinary.

Draft at the brewpub. This comes across as just a bit thin. There’s a hint of caramel and toffee, but generally this is not as characterful as the other two we tried. Certainly easy to drink, but I choose the others. (#4381, 11/30/2011)

(Rating #3852)

bottle from Altstadthof brewpub. Thin off white head. Red / amber pour, clear. Malty after taste. Nice enough.

Very good beer. The beer is more focus on the malt taste witch I find very good, not so much bitterness... that’s a beer that we can drink all day!

On tap at the brewpub. Dark brown with a creamy tan head. Sweet caramel aroma followed by sweet molasses and hints of chocolate. On the sweet side, but drinkable.

On tap at Brewpub, Nurnberg. Reddish brown color with nice huge beige head. Aroma, full of fruit and caramel. Taste, very fruity, caramel, sweet malt. Nice bittersweet finish. Nice.

My Bottom Line :
Drinkable but underhopped, this reddish lager focuses on its light caramel and toasted bread flavors in a soft, naturally carbonated mouthfeel.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A sheet of foam covers the hazy copper.
-Fruity edges recall plums and pomegranates.
-This might be a different offering for Germany, but it feels like most generic Amber or Red Ales brewed in North America.
-The body is plumper than your average session lager.
-The finish really needs some more hop bitterness to create balance.

On tap at the brewpub.

Koelschtrinker (7034) - Köln (Cologne), North Rhine-Westphalia, GERMANY - JUN 3, 2011
